What is The Design of Everyday Things about?

Donald Norman explains why confusing products are usually evidence of poor design rather than careless users. Through doors, switches, appliances, controls, and digital systems, he develops human-centered principles such as discoverability, affordances, signifiers, mapping, feedback, constraints, and designing for inevitable human error.

Following the Argument

Don Norman introduces the revised edition as a way to become a better observer of both confusing objects and designs that quietly support everyday activity. Good design often attracts less attention because it lets a person concentrate on the task. When a familiar object repeatedly confuses capable people, the useful question is what its design communicates, rather than why everyone failed to remember the correct procedure.

The revision broadens usability into the whole experience: appearance, pleasure, emotion, and the practical conditions under which products are developed and sold. It also sharpens a distinction that the original edition left confusing. An affordance concerns an action that an object and a person's capabilities make possible; a signifier is a perceptible clue that helps the person discover what to do. Both matter, but a designer cannot assume that a possible action is self-explanatory.

Following the Argument

Norman also gives business constraints a larger role. A product must be manufactured, supported, purchased, and used, often by people with different priorities. Human-centered design therefore combines an understanding of people with technical and organizational judgment. The book's enduring questions concern how people perceive, interpret, and act; its examples and technological expectations belong to the revised edition's period. The aim is to apply its reasoning to new situations, not to preserve every old interface or prediction.
