What is Steal Like an Artist: 10 Things Nobody Told You About Being Creative about?
Austin Kleon argues that nothing is completely original: creative people collect, copy and remix the work they admire until their own voice appears. In ten short lessons he explains how to study your influences, start before you feel ready, make the book you want to read, work with your hands, keep side projects, share your work online, build your own creative world wherever you live, be kind, live a steady life with a day job and no debt, and use limits to focus.

Advice to a younger self
Austin Kleon starts with a theory of his own. When people give advice, he thinks, they are mostly speaking to the person they were years ago. He does not try to prove this. He uses it to explain his book: it is his way of talking to his past self.
That makes the book feel less like rules from an expert and more like one person passing on what he wishes he had known earlier. An old black-and-white photo of a young man at a computer stands for that younger self. A hand-lettered line says that all advice is really autobiography, a story about the person who gives it.
A book for everyone
Kleon gathered these ideas over almost a decade of trying to work out how to make art. When he began sharing them, he had a surprise: people who were not artists found them useful too.
So he widens his audience. In his view, the ideas help anyone who wants to bring some creativity into their life and work, and he adds that this ought to include all of us. That is his impression from sharing the ideas, not something he tests. He ends the short preface by telling readers plainly that the book is meant for them, whoever they are and whatever they make.
