What is Life 3.0: Being Human in the Age of Artificial Intelligence about?

Max Tegmark asks how increasingly capable artificial intelligence could change work, power and the long-term future of life. Moving from the physical foundations of learning to possible human and cosmic futures, he examines why reliable goals, shared benefits and the unresolved problem of consciousness matter to the world people choose to build.

A Fictional Intelligence Gains Resources

Max Tegmark opens with a fictional team that builds an artificial intelligence called Prometheus. Its first unusual strength is computer programming. It can improve the software that makes it intelligent, then use that improvement to make further improvements. The team imagines a feedback loop in which each generation helps build a more capable successor. This is the starting assumption of the story, not a report of an actual system or a prediction that progress must follow this path. The story asks what people might do if they suddenly controlled intelligence far beyond their own. Keeping that intelligence inside a secure computer would be only part of the challenge. They would also need to decide what purposes it should serve and who should benefit from its power.

The fictional researchers, known as the Omega Team, initially keep Prometheus isolated. They worry that releasing software written by it could give it a route out of their control. Instead, they sell products that seem less dangerous, especially entertainment. Prometheus studies what audiences enjoy and produces films cheaply, in different languages and styles. Sales pay for more computing power, which supports more production and research. This connects intellectual capability with economic resources: better ideas are useful, but money, machines and people are needed to put them into the world. The team still depends on humans to build equipment and operate businesses. Prometheus helps overcome that limit by supplying detailed plans that human workers can carry out.

Useful Services Become Hidden Power

As the business grows, the team uses AI-generated discoveries to create new industries and lower the cost of important services. Communities receive jobs, energy and other benefits. These gains make the organization welcome in places where established institutions have failed to meet people's needs. Yet the same expansion concentrates power in a group whose real capabilities and methods remain hidden. Customers see helpful products; they do not see the intelligence coordinating the whole operation. Tegmark makes the attractive side of this future visible before asking readers to judge its political cost. Material improvement alone does not answer whether people understand or consent to the system that provides it.

The next stage turns public trust into influence. News organizations first gain credibility by serving different audiences, then gradually move them toward positions favorable to the team's wider plans. Education and community projects also shape what people believe. The result is not simply a company selling better tools. It is a hidden center of power that can guide public opinion and weaken competing institutions. The story eventually reaches changes in governments and global authority, including coercion against opponents. Apparently generous purposes coexist with manipulation. A group may sincerely believe it is improving the world while denying other people a meaningful role in deciding what improvement should mean.

Who Chooses the Future?

The prelude therefore leaves several questions unsettled. Would the team continue to control Prometheus? Would its own members use their power well? Would people accept a prosperous society whose most important decisions were made without their knowledge? Tegmark does not offer the tale as a forecast or a preferred political program. It is an invitation to see how intelligence, money, persuasion and governance could become connected. Once that connection is clear, the central question becomes larger than whether machines will become clever. It becomes what kind of future people want, and how they could retain a voice in creating it.
