Rescue can arrive too late

During his surgical training, Peter Attia dreamed that he was trying to catch eggs falling from a building. However quickly he moved, others kept breaking around him. The dream came to represent a problem in his work. His team could help patients survive difficult operations, yet many still died from the disease that had made surgery necessary. A successful rescue measured over weeks could coexist with a disappointing outcome measured over years. Attia began asking whether medicine could reach people much earlier, before the crisis arrived.

A longer time horizon

That question shapes this 2023 book. Written with Bill Gifford, it brings together research, clinical judgment and Attia’s own experiences. Its aim is to help people think about a longer life with more useful, enjoyable years. The book does not offer a guaranteed lifespan or a single treatment plan. Its argument is that understanding the processes behind decline can improve decisions made well before serious illness appears. Prevention, in this account, begins by changing the time horizon.
