What is The Hidden Life of Trees about?

Peter Wohlleben explores how trees grow, compete, exchange resources and shape the forests around them. Drawing on his work in German woodland and research on roots, fungi and forest ecology, he argues for protecting the relationships that commercial forestry can disrupt while asking how people should use living forests.

A forest on another clock

Tim Flannery asks readers to change the speed at which they imagine a forest. A tree may live for centuries, so processes that seem inactive on a human clock can still matter deeply. Signals can move slowly through tissues while chemicals carried through the air warn nearby plants of feeding animals. The absence of spoken words does not mean the absence of information.

More than separate trunks

His main invitation is to look beyond separate trunks. Fungal connections and shared resources make a forest more than a collection of solitary plants. Trees also create conditions that help their neighbors survive, including shelter and a steadier local climate. Flannery introduces the striking example of stumps kept alive by surrounding trees. He presents these relationships with the language of care, while acknowledging that research into the underground network is still young. The foreword sets an attitude of curiosity; the following chapters develop the observations, explanations and questions behind it.
