Planning without complete control

Parenting creates a peculiar mixture of responsibility and limited control. Emily Oster prepared carefully for her son Finn's sleep, then a power outage disrupted the arrangement. He slept without the swaddle she had considered essential. The experience did not prove that swaddling never matters. It showed how easily parents mistake a plan that sometimes helps for a condition they must control perfectly. A child has a temperament and a changing body, while a family has work, meals, relationships, and finite energy. Better decisions begin by accepting these realities. Evidence can narrow uncertainty and identify meaningful risks, but it cannot turn parenting into a guaranteed sequence of correct moves. Oster's purpose is to give parents reasons for choices, so that confident advice from another family does not automatically become an obligation.

The value of realistic alternatives

Her economist's approach combines evidence with the value of alternatives. A prepared meal kit costs money, but it may preserve the experience of cooking dinner while reducing shopping and planning. Comparing only its price with raw ingredients misses the time being purchased. Parenting choices have similar tradeoffs: time spent pumping, commuting, supervising an activity, or researching another product cannot simultaneously be spent sleeping, earning money, or enjoying a child. The relevant comparison is between realistic options available to this family. A choice that works well for one household may be unsuitable for another because income, support, preferences, or the child's needs differ. Naming those differences makes disagreement easier to understand. It also gives the parent's own wellbeing a legitimate place in the decision rather than treating every adult cost as irrelevant.

What a comparison can establish

Evidence still matters, but associations need interpretation. If breastfed children later score higher on a test, breastfeeding may be one explanation. Family education, income, and other differences may also contribute because feeding choices are not randomly assigned. A large dataset can measure an association precisely without identifying its cause. Oster therefore asks how a study formed its comparison groups, what it actually measured, and whether another design supports the same conclusion. Where evidence is strong, preferences do not erase it. Where effects are uncertain or choices have different advantages, data may leave more than one reasonable answer. This course follows that reasoning across the book's original order. Its medical examples remain coverage of the 2019 source: historical study results and the author's interpretation should not be mistaken for current treatment guidance or a promise about an individual child.
