Free preview: Change the assumptions beneath the effort
Assumptions beneath effort 1
Stephen Covey begins with a problem that better organization alone cannot solve. Someone can work harder, communicate more pleasantly and reach more goals while remaining dissatisfied with the life those achievements create. A parent can offer encouragement that still makes a child feel inadequate. A manager can announce cooperation while rewarding rivalry. In each case, improving the visible technique leaves an underlying assumption untouched. Covey's approach starts by examining that assumption.
He describes this through his own relationship with a son who was struggling in several areas. Covey and his wife, Sandra, tried to encourage, protect and help him. Yet their support carried a message they did not intend: they saw a child who could not manage without their intervention. They were also invested in what his performance said about them as parents. Their reassuring words existed alongside a deeper expectation of inadequacy. More of the same encouragement could therefore strengthen the very relationship they wanted to change.
Their shift began when they questioned their perception of their son and their motives for helping. They worked at seeing him as a separate person whose development did not need to follow their preferred timetable. That changed how they responded to him. Covey reports improvement over the following weeks and months, rather than presenting one perfect sentence that instantly transformed the child. The account is a personal illustration, not proof that every developmental difficulty is caused by parental expectations. Its useful question is narrower: what does my behavior communicate when it is interpreted through the belief beneath it?
Assumptions beneath effort 2
Covey calls such organizing perceptions paradigms. A paradigm is like a map: it helps us interpret where we are and what action makes sense. But a map can be inaccurate. Moving faster with the wrong city map does not bring us closer to our destination. Similarly, a person who assumes that employees avoid responsibility may monitor every detail, then interpret their dependence on instructions as confirmation that monitoring was necessary. The behavior and the assumption can reinforce each other.
The book uses an ambiguous drawing that can appear to depict either a young woman or an old woman. People prepared to see one image can become frustrated when others confidently see the other. Progress comes when they stop arguing about who is sensible and examine particular lines together. This does not mean there are no facts. It means that confidence in an interpretation is not enough to establish that the interpretation is complete. Another person's perspective may reveal something our own preparation made difficult to notice.
Against quick techniques for appearing successful, Covey emphasizes character: integrity, responsibility, fairness, patience and a willingness to serve. He does not make communication skills or positive attitudes worthless. He treats them as insufficient when they are separated from trustworthy conduct. A persuasive apology means little if the same behavior continues. A mission statement means little if decisions consistently contradict it.
Assumptions beneath effort 3
Covey also distinguishes principles from practices and values. Practices are particular ways of acting that may work in one setting and fail in another. Values are what someone prizes, which can include destructive aims. Principles, in his philosophy, are enduring standards against which choices should be examined. His claim that these standards have the force of natural laws is a moral and spiritual conviction, not an experimental finding. The practical starting point is to examine both what we are trying to achieve and the assumptions through which we pursue it.
