A Painful Loop of Delay

Nils Salzgeber opens by describing a reader he thinks he knows. This person truly wants to exercise, eat well and finish work on time. But some tasks feel so uncomfortable that they turn away from them and lose hours to TV, games or social media. When the distraction ends, guilt and harsh self-blame arrive, and that pain pushes them back into more distraction.

He says it hurts even more because a procrastinator often knows how capable they are. They see their potential, yet cannot move from thinking to doing. In his view, the result is missed chances, shame and regret. So he asks why we keep doing something that hurts this much, and how we can break free.

He answers with his own story. A little over two years before writing, he left university to try online marketing and moved into an apartment with his brother Jonas. Jonas often worked late, so Salzgeber spent many evenings alone. With no one around, he finally felt the guilt and anxiety under his habits, feelings he says most people numb with distraction. Even ten minutes of meditation felt hard, and writing for his business felt worse. When he gave up, he escaped into TV, games or videos, then faced a flood of self-criticism. His story points to a first step for today: when you switch off a distraction, notice the guilt that comes instead of covering it up again.

From "This Needs to Stop" to a Plan

Salzgeber says he finally told himself that this had to stop. He ordered several books on procrastination, including Eat That Frog and The Procrastination Equation. Over a couple of months, he tested their ideas and slowly shaped them into his own methods, with many setbacks on the way. Today, he says, he gets up early, takes cold showers, meditates and exercises daily, and can work whether he feels like it or not. He still procrastinates at times, but the guilt, fear and despair are much easier to handle. He tells this to show that change is possible, however hopeless you feel.

His promise is modest. The book will not end procrastination completely. He expects you to procrastinate less, feel less guilty about it, and enjoy free time without feeling you should be working.

He kept the book short, he says, because a huge book is the wrong thing to hand a procrastinator. It mixes theory with practical steps, and each step is marked TRY THIS. Chapter 1 explains how procrastination works, chapters 2 to 9 each cover one topic with tools, and chapter 10 covers willpower through long-term habits whose benefits grow slowly. Start today as he suggests: pick the TRY THIS steps that seem useful to you, and skip the rest.
