What is Ultralearning about?

Many people want to learn hard skills quickly, but school and casual study often fail to build real ability. Scott H. Young defines ultralearning as self-directed, intense learning and explains it through nine principles, from Metalearning and Directness to Retrieval and Experimentation, backed by cases such as his MIT Challenge, Benny Lewis, and Judit Polgár. He ends with a five-step plan for a first project and is open about the limits of the evidence.

A bedroom exam and a bold plan

Scott Young opens the book in his bedroom in Vancouver, Canada. He is preparing for the final exam of an MIT calculus class. He is not an MIT student, and he has never been to Massachusetts. He started the class only five days earlier.

Young had studied business at the University of Manitoba, a middle-ranked Canadian school he could afford. He later felt it was the wrong major, because he wanted to make things like programs and websites. A second four-year degree, with loans and rules, did not appeal to him. Then he found MIT classes posted free online, with lectures, quizzes and even real exams. He decided to try learning a whole computer science degree this way, and called the plan the MIT Challenge.

The free materials had gaps. Some classes were missing, and one required class had no recorded lectures and no textbook. He chose a simpler core: pass the final exams and, later, finish the programming projects. In a test class, he watched the videos at double speed and tested himself one question at a time. He estimated that the remaining thirty-two classes might take under a year.

Young saw bigger stakes: tuition is rising fast, and a degree is now barely a foot in the door.

Benny Lewis and Roger Craig

Young's interest began years earlier in Paris, when he met Benny Lewis, an Irishman who tries to learn a new language in three months. Lewis's method was to speak from the first day, talk to strangers, start with a phrasebook and leave formal study for later. Lewis had taken German in school for five years, yet he said he could not even order breakfast in it. So for his German challenge he aimed at C2, the top exam level, which means full mastery. He passed four of the five parts but failed listening. Lewis blamed too much radio and too little active listening practice. He missed his goal, but only just.

Roger Craig set records on the quiz show Jeopardy!, including $77,000 won in one day. Craig's problem was that the show can ask about almost anything. A computer scientist, he built his own study website. He downloaded the questions from every past game, quizzed himself, and used software to sort them into topics. A graph showed which topics were common and which were his weak ones. He found he was weak on fashion, so he studied it more. He also saw that the show is made to entertain viewers, so he could study the best-known trivia in each topic instead of digging deep.

Craig then used spaced-repetition software, which times the review of each fact so you neither forget it nor over-review it. After his record day, his first thought was that his site really worked.

Eric Barone builds a game alone

Eric Barone had just finished a computer science degree when he decided to make his own video game. He wanted to improve on a farming game he loved as a child. Games are usually made by teams, but Barone chose to work entirely alone, to keep full control of his vision. So he had to learn programming, music composition, sound design, story writing and pixel art. Pixel art, which builds pictures by placing colored dots one at a time, was his weakest skill.

Barone practiced directly on the art he needed for his game. He compared his work with art he admired, asking why he liked some pieces and not others. When his colors looked dull, he studied color theory. He redid most of his art three to five times, and the character portraits at least ten times. To keep his focus, he worked as a theater usher for minimum wage instead of taking a programming job.

After five years, Barone released Stardew Valley in February 2016. He estimates it sold well over 3 million copies in its first year. Within months, he went from earning minimum wage to being a millionaire.

Many ultralearners, one pattern

Young passed his calculus exam and finished the MIT Challenge in September 2012, less than twelve months after starting. Along the way, he moved from one class at a time to three or four at once, to reduce the harm of cramming. Once finishing looked likely, he cut his study from sixty hours a week to thirty-five or forty. Young says the project showed him that deep learning does not require school.

Online, some people doubted that employers would value the project like a degree. Young says his goal was never a job, but to see what was possible.

Next, Young and a friend tried "The Year Without English": four countries, three months each, with no English from the first day. In Spain, the method worked far better than they had hoped. In China and South Korea, the languages were much harder, and the rule began to crack. Young also spent a month learning to draw faces, laying each original photo over his sketch to see his errors.

Young then found many others like these people, and he calls this pattern ultralearning. These people mostly worked alone, cared about learning above all, and fiercely improved their methods. Young wants to pull out their shared principles, so ordinary students and workers can use them too.
