Digital Minimalism — Book Summary
សង្ខេបសៀវភៅ «Digital Minimalism»
What is Digital Minimalism about?
Cal Newport examines how smartphones and social platforms shifted from useful novelties into systems that compete aggressively for attention. He proposes digital minimalism: selecting a small number of technologies that strongly support deeply held values, then controlling how those tools are used through a thirty-day declutter and durable practices for solitude, conversation, leisure, and attention.

Introduction — 1
A phone can be useful in nearly every part of life while the life organized around it becomes less satisfying. You can find directions, answer a colleague, see a relative's photograph, and follow an important story, yet finish the day feeling that your attention belonged to everyone except you. Cal Newport begins with this tension. His concern is not whether digital tools offer benefits. Many plainly do. The problem is whether the collection of tools and habits we have acquired serves the life we would deliberately choose.
Introduction — 2
The writer Andrew Sullivan provides an unusually intense example. Years of constant online publishing left him exhausted and struggling to experience the world without turning it into material for the next update. His situation was extreme, but Newport heard a quieter version from readers who were not professional commentators. They did not necessarily want to reject the internet. They wanted to stop reaching automatically for it whenever a conversation paused or a difficult feeling appeared. Convenience had gradually become a pattern they no longer felt they controlled.
Introduction — 3
Newport thinks small adjustments often fail because they leave the underlying decision rule intact. If a service offers any benefit, we keep it; if it demands more attention, we try to exercise a little more restraint. This produces a growing collection of individually defensible distractions. Digital minimalism starts elsewhere: identify what matters deeply, choose the tools that strongly support it, and define how those tools will be used. A worthwhile activity does not need a digital component, and an available digital benefit does not automatically deserve a place in life.
Introduction — 4
The book combines this philosophy with a practical reset and habits that make the resulting life attractive. Newport draws on historical examples, research, and reports from a volunteer experiment involving more than sixteen hundred people. These reports illustrate possibilities; they are not a controlled demonstration that everyone will experience the same results. He also acknowledges his unusual perspective as someone who had avoided major social-media habits himself. Read the book as an argument and a set of experiments to adapt, with success measured by a more intentional life rather than by how little technology you can tolerate.
