Stolen Focus — Book Summary
សង្ខេបសៀវភៅ «ហេតុអ្វីយើងលែងផ្តោតអារម្មណ៍បាន»
What is Stolen Focus about?
Johann Hari asks why so many people find it harder to concentrate, and argues that the cause is not personal weakness but twelve deep forces, from sleep loss, stress and pollution to processed food, tracking technology and children's lost free play. He builds the case from three months offline in Provincetown and interviews with scientists, doctors and former tech insiders, covering flow states, mind-wandering, surveillance capitalism, cruel optimism and the dispute over ADHD and stimulant drugs. His conclusion is that a systemic problem needs collective answers, such as banning surveillance capitalism, a four-day week and a childhood rebuilt around free play.

A Promise That Led to Graceland
Johann Hari begins with his godson, whom he calls Adam. When Adam was nine, he became obsessed with Elvis Presley, and Hari promised to take him one day to Elvis's home, Graceland.
Ten years later, Adam had left school at fifteen and spent almost all his time switching between screens. He could not stay on one topic for more than a few minutes. Hari felt his own focus breaking up too. So he offered to pay for the trip on one condition: Adam must keep his phone off during the day.
At Graceland, an iPad had replaced the human guides, and most visitors stared at it instead of the rooms. Adam broke his promise again and again. Hari lost his temper and snatched the phone. Later he saw that his anger was really aimed at himself: he too was losing the ability to be present. Adam said he knew something was wrong but did not know how to fix it.
The Problem Is Real, Not an Illusion
At the Mona Lisa in Paris, Hari watched the crowd for more than an hour, and nobody looked at the painting for more than a few seconds.
Then he interviewed Professor Roy Baumeister, a leading expert on willpower. Baumeister admitted that his own control over his attention had weakened. He used to read and write for hours, but now his mind jumped around.
For a long time, Hari told himself the crisis was an illusion, since every generation complains about focus. Nobody ever tested the public's attention in the same way year after year, so there is no direct proof. Instead, Hari points to many proven causes of poor attention that have grown, against only one trend he found that might help. In a small study, American college students switched task about every sixty-five seconds, with a median of nineteen seconds on one thing. Gloria Mark of the University of California, Irvine, found that office workers stay on one task for about three minutes.
Not a Personal Failure
Hari used to blame his own laziness or his phone. He now argues that both views are wrong. Professor Joel Nigg, an expert on children's attention, compared the problem with obesity. Fifty years ago there was little obesity, and today it is common in the West. People did not suddenly become greedy. Their surroundings changed, with different food and cities that are hard to walk in, and their bodies changed with them. Nigg said something similar may be happening to attention, though for some people biology also plays a part.
Hari concludes that powerful forces are doing this to everyone, and Big Tech is only one of them. He names twelve deep forces that harm attention. Personal steps are worth taking, he says, but they solve only a slice of the problem. In his view, a systemic problem needs a systemic solution, so people must also act together.
Why It Matters, and How Hari Checked
Hari gives three reasons to care. First, a distracted life is a smaller life. Michael Posner at the University of Oregon found that after an interruption it takes about twenty-three minutes, on average, to regain the same focus. James Williams, a philosopher at Oxford, compares weak attention to a muddy windshield: a driver must clean it before steering toward any goal. Second, Hari argues that democracy and solving big problems need many people to focus for a long time. He believes it is no coincidence that the attention crisis has come with the worst crisis of democracy since the 1930s. Third, a problem made by people can be changed by people.
Hari, a journalist rather than an expert, says scientists often disagree, so he tries to show where the evidence is strong, thin or disputed.
After Graceland, he spent three hours reading the same first pages of a novel. Believing the cure was more discipline and no phone, he booked three months in Provincetown, on Cape Cod, with no smartphone and no internet. He admits most people, including his working-class family, could never do this.
