Free preview: Preface

More speed cannot solve every demand

Brian Tracy begins with a problem that greater speed alone cannot solve. Work, personal responsibilities and interesting things to read keep arriving. Even a productive person cannot complete every possible activity. Waiting until everything is finished means waiting for a day that, in his view, will never come.

His response is selection. Some activities need less time or must stop so that a few important ones can receive more attention. The book develops this approach through twenty-one methods for choosing, beginning and completing useful work. Tracy presents them as practical techniques suited to different situations. He explicitly avoids lengthy research and psychological explanations of procrastination. His purpose is to move from knowing useful ideas to practicing them.

Learning through other people's methods

Tracy explains the book's approach through his own working life. After leaving school, doing physical labor and traveling, he entered commission sales. He struggled until he began asking successful salespeople how they worked. He tried their methods and says his sales improved. When he became a manager, he repeated the process with experienced managers.

The experience changed how he understood differences in achievement. Instead of assuming others were inherently better, he saw practices he could learn. He later tested productivity ideas in his own life and taught those he found useful. His central lesson is to concentrate on important tasks and complete them well. This is the conclusion he draws from experience, rather than proof that copying a method guarantees the same career result.
