What is Crucial Conversations about?

This book looks at what people do when a talk matters a lot, opinions differ, and emotions run high, and why most of us then fall into silence or violence instead of honest dialogue. The authors teach a step-by-step method built on named tools: Start with Heart, Learn to Look, Make It Safe with Mutual Purpose and Mutual Respect, Master My Stories, STATE My Path, Explore Others' Paths with AMPP, and Move to Action. It uses worked examples such as Kevin and the Fool's Choice, Greta, Carole, Wendy and the dividing of a mother's estate.

The Authors' Bold Claim

The authors say that when they published Crucial Conversations in 2002, they made a bold claim. They argued that the root cause of many human problems is how people behave when others disagree with them about high-stakes, emotional issues. They also said that organizations could improve a great deal if people learned the skills of those who handle these "crucial" moments well.

Ten years later, the authors say, their belief has grown stronger. They write that a growing body of research shows what happens when leaders build a Crucial Conversations culture. They list safer nuclear power plants, more loyal customers at financial services firms, more lives saved in hospitals, better service from government organizations, and smoother work across countries at tech firms. The preface does not name the studies behind these claims, so they are the authors' own report.

The authors also admit that research numbers are not what pleased them most. They say the best results came from thousands of stories told by readers who used the ideas to bring change when it mattered. One woman reunited with the father she had been cut off from after reading the book. A nurse spoke up to a defensive doctor who was misreading a patient's symptoms, and she says this saved the patient's life. One man kept his family from splitting apart with his siblings over a will after their father's death. With nearly two million readers, the authors say, those stories multiply.

What Is New in This Edition

The authors explain what is new in this edition. Some changes make key points clearer, update examples, or sharpen the focus. The changes they are most excited about are summaries of new research, reader stories that show key ideas, links to videos, and an afterword with new personal thoughts from each author. They say they are confident these changes will improve the reading experience. They also say the changes should help readers turn the printed words into habits at work and at home.

The authors then look ahead. They admit that ten years earlier they dared to hope these ideas would change the world. They believed that handling crucial moments better could give organizations, individuals, families, and nations a better future. What they did not know was whether the world would respond. So far, they say, the response has been good. They have taught heads of government, business leaders, and social entrepreneurs. They felt a greater sense of possibility the day they held copies of the book in Arabic and Hebrew. They have shared the principles in places of turmoil, such as Kabul and Cairo, and in places of growth, such as Bangkok and Boston. Each new audience, they say, makes them want their work to last, and that is the reason for the new edition.

Finally, the authors point to a website made for readers, CrucialConversations.com/exclusive. They say it holds tools and videos that the book refers to.
