What is How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk about?
Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish explore how everyday talk can help or hurt the relationship between parents and children. Through family stories and practice exercises, they show how to accept feelings, invite cooperation, replace punishment with repair and shared problem-solving, and help children become more independent without trapping them in labels. This edition also includes Joanna Faber’s experiences using the approach with the next generation.

Why understanding needs practice
Faber and Mazlish did not first set out to write step-by-step instructions for parents. Their earlier book described what they had learned from workshops with psychologist Haim Ginott. They hoped readers would understand the ideas and find their own ways to use them.
Some readers did. Others wanted more help. They asked for exercises, examples, and reminders. They could see that their old ways of talking caused problems, but they did not yet know what to say instead.
The authors also learned from people attending their workshops. Parents and other caregivers shared what worked, what felt awkward, and where they struggled. Those experiences helped shape this book.
Its purpose is to make communication skills easier to practice. Readers can adapt the examples to their own voices and families. The larger goal is to treat both parents and children as people whose feelings and needs deserve respect.
