What is How to Talk to Anyone about?
Leil Lowndes asks why some people easily win the trust and help of others, and answers that it comes down to people skills: the small signals of body, voice and word choice that draw people in or push them away. Her book gives ninety-two named, memorable techniques, such as the Flooding Smile, Sticky Eyes, Never the Naked City, Echoing, Name Shower and The Great Scorecard in the Sky, arranged from first impressions and small talk through party networking, phone manners, praise and the unwritten rules of the workplace. She builds them from stories of people she coached and observed rather than formal studies, and this summary notes where her figures have no named source.

Why People Skills Lead to Success
Leil Lowndes begins with a question. Why do some people seem to have everything: the best jobs, loving partners, good friends, and plenty of money? She says they are often not smarter, better educated, or better looking than anyone else. What sets them apart, she argues, is people skills: the ability to deal well with other people. Nobody reaches the top alone. Successful people have won the trust and help of hundreds of others, who lifted them up step by step. When people lower down complain that the winners are snobs, Lowndes says the real cause is often the complainers' own mistakes in communication.
She believes well-liked people carry a bag of tricks, and her book hands over ninety-two of them. The first idea behind the tricks came from a college drama teacher. Unhappy with her acting in a play, he told her that her body was saying something different from her words. The way you move, he said, tells the story of your life. Lowndes explains that every move, smile, frown, and choice of word sends a message below people's awareness. These signals can pull others toward you or push them away. A gut feeling about a person or a deal, she says, comes from signals like these. She also repeats an estimate from a University of Pennsylvania expert: as many as ten thousand units of information may pass between two people each second. It is a rough guess that nobody can check, not a measured fact.
Carnegie Said What, Not How
Lowndes read many books on communication, charm, and leadership, and hundreds of studies from around the world. Most of them, she says, only confirmed the ideas in Dale Carnegie's 1936 book, How to Win Friends and Influence People: smile, show interest in others, and make people feel good about themselves. One study that looked for charisma, a special power to attract people, in a body chemical went nowhere and was soon dropped.
So why write another book? Lowndes gives two reasons. First, Carnegie and many other experts say what to do, but they give no steps for doing it. It is like telling a traveler to speak the local language without giving any lessons. She adds that people today look harder at a smile or a compliment. Successful people are surrounded by others who fake interest, so they have learned to doubt easy praise. Second, the world has changed a great deal since 1936, so she wanted a new method for today.
To find it, she watched successful salespeople, speakers, clergy, performers, and athletes. She studied the body language, timing, and word choices of admired leaders. When she saw a small piece of magic in the way someone communicated, she asked that person to help her explain it. Then she turned it into an easy trick and gave it a name that is easy to remember. Seminar members and company leaders who were her clients added their own ideas. She promises that the tricks are easy to learn, though some are subtle. Readers should note that her proof is her own observation and these people's stories, not a formal study.
