Principles — Book Summary

What is Principles about?
Ray Dalio's Principles asks how a person or an organization can get what it wants by seeing reality accurately and dealing with it, and sets out principles he says came from his own mistakes and from running his company, Bridgewater. Dalio offers them as beliefs to stress test with the question "Is it true?", building a life method on five steps (goals, problems, diagnosis, design, doing) and a management method on radical truthfulness, believability-weighted opinions, the issues log and the drilldown for finding root causes. The summary follows his life principles and then his management principles on hiring, probing, training and sorting people, and treating decisions as bets.

What principles are and why Dalio wrote them
Ray Dalio defines a principle as an idea that can be used again and again in similar situations, not a narrow answer to one question. He compares life to a game: every game has principles that good players master, and so does life. Some principles belong to one area, such as skiing, parenting, managing or investing. Others are broad "life principles" that shape how a person approaches everything.
Dalio credits whatever success he and his company, Bridgewater, have had to working by certain principles. Every organization faces the same jobs: building a great culture, finding the right people, helping them do great things and solving problems. In his view, how they handle these jobs is what sets them apart. He says working by principles is like getting fit: almost anyone can do it if they are willing to do the work.
Until recently, he did not write his principles down. He felt it would be presumptuous, meaning too bold, to tell others what would work best for them. Then he saw people he cared about struggle. Their problems almost always came from breaking principles, and applying principles could solve them. So he began listing the types of problems and the broken principles behind them. He found that about 200 principles cover nearly all the problems, and he expects to add more as he learns.
Beliefs to test, not rules to obey
Dalio says these principles are simply what he believes. Calling them "his" is not a boast. He wants the people around him to think for themselves, so he explains the reasoning behind each principle. Others can then stress test it, that is, push hard on it to find weak points. He is confident the principles work: he has thought hard about them, they have served him for many years, and they have held up under questioning by hundreds of smart, doubting people. Even so, he says nothing is certain. The best anyone can hope for is "highly probable", and more testing raises the chance that a principle is right.
Dalio also argues that the most valuable principles come from a person's own encounters with reality and reflection, not from simply accepting what someone else teaches. So he offers his principles to think about, not to follow blindly. He hopes that, as people use them, "Ray's principles" will become "our principles", and he will fade from view, the way people forget their ski or tennis teacher and keep only what works.
For every principle, he asks the reader one question: "Is it true?" He admits the work is unfinished. The principles are linked to each other like a web rather than a line, so he groups them by large themes. Others will write their own, and his text is at most one reference.
How the book is built and read
Dalio splits the text into three parts that can be read alone or together. Part 1 explains what principles are and why they matter, and has nothing to do with his own. Part 2 sets out his most basic life principles: how to learn what reality is like and deal with it, and the common traps that block people, which he says can be avoided to make lives radically better.
Part 3 covers his management principles as practiced at Bridgewater, which he has run for more than 35 years. It starts from his belief that a company's results depend mainly on its people and its culture. Then it covers building a culture, hiring, managing for excellence, solving problems and making decisions. Because these management principles are his life principles applied to work, Part 2 helps but is not required. For the most understanding with the least effort, he suggests Parts 1 and 2 plus the start of Part 3, through its Summary and Table of Principles. He says this gives nearly the whole picture in about 55 pages.
Above all, Dalio wants readers to think for themselves: to decide what they want, what is true and what to do about it. He asks two things: be open-minded, and answer questions about these three things honestly. If a reader cannot do this, he says, they should ask why, because they have probably found one of the biggest obstacles to getting what they want from life.
