What is Breakthrough Advertising about?

Eugene Schwartz, a mail order copywriter, asks how a headline and the ad beneath it can open a new market for a product, and argues that no copied formula can do it because every market is a fresh problem. His method starts from mass desire that advertising can only channel, then reads the market by its five stages of awareness and five stages of sophistication, and builds the body copy with seven techniques: Intensification, Identification, Gradualization, Redefinition, Mechanization, Concentration and Camouflage. It is taught through period ads for spark plugs, cigarettes, a TV repair manual, English courses and Volkswagen, with Schwartz's own sales claims flagged as unverified.

Small sales, big claims

In 1966, Prentice-Hall published Breakthrough Advertising. It sold only a few thousand copies. Yet Eugene Schwartz says that, over the years, readers kept telling him the book had helped them make millions of dollars.

What surprised him most was who these readers were. Looking back, he says not one of them was a copywriter, which means a person who writes the words of ads. They included a publisher, a financier and a maker of novelty products. One financier told him that his net worth grew from $100,000 to $10 million within a year of getting the book.

These stories are Schwartz's own report. He gives no names or records to check them, so they are best read as his claims, not proof.

Schwartz then asks a big question. Could a book about how to put sentences together really be this powerful? Perhaps, he suggests, its ideas reach far beyond advertising. They might help people open whole new markets for their products. The rest of his preface tries to answer that question.

Not about ads, but about markets

Eighteen years later, the publisher Boardroom Books asked to reprint Breakthrough Advertising. Schwartz read it again with fresh eyes, as if for the first time. He admits he felt embarrassed by what he found. He had believed he wrote a book about advertising. In fact, he now says, it shows step by step how to build a new market for a new product or an old one.

His reasoning is that every business does the same basic job: it creates or uses a market. When sales of an old product slow down, a fresh market can give it new life. Schwartz calls people in business Market-Makers. Usually the market exists before the product. But sometimes a seller senses a new want first, such as computers in homes or music people carry with them, and helps that market take shape. Making a market also means making the product and a way for buyers to get it, not only an ad.

His key idea is simple. People do not change, he says. Only the direction of their wants changes. A seller cannot make people want something, but can channel the wants they already have toward a product that truly satisfies them. A market may need millions of people, yet one printed message can send them all to your shop or catalog. He admits the book's examples have aged, but he argues the principles have not.

Schwartz sums up the book with a joke. It is not about a better mousetrap but about "building larger mice". He means growing the biggest market possible, then making people feel their need, and your answer to it, more strongly. As proof, he says he sold over twenty million dollars of a single book for Rodale Press. These are his own figures, with no outside check.
