What is Ogilvy on Advertising about?

David Ogilvy, founder of the Ogilvy & Mather agency, reports what he has seen work in advertising: doing homework on the product, choosing the promise and the big idea, and writing the headlines, pictures, copy and television commercials that sell rather than merely entertain. He tests his claims against Gallup, Starch and direct-response results, calls his findings hints rather than rules, and also covers running an agency, winning and choosing clients, direct mail, business-to-business, corporate and cause advertising, and how to compete with Procter & Gamble. The book closes with a defence of advertising against its critics, an attack on dishonest political ads and billboards, and thirteen predictions.

Information that makes people buy

To Ogilvy, advertising is not entertainment or art. It is a way to give people information. When he writes an ad, he does not want praise for being creative. He wants the reader to find it so interesting that the reader buys the product. He makes the point with two speakers in ancient Greece. After one, people said how well he spoke. After Demosthenes, they said, "Let us march against Philip." Good advertising, like the second speaker, makes people act.

In 1963 Ogilvy set out the principles behind his agency, Ogilvy & Mather, in Confessions of an Advertising Man. He says the agency, then little more than a small creative shop in New York, has since grown into one of the four biggest in the world, with 140 offices in 40 countries. To him, this proves the principles work. He admits he is now very old, but he suggests that a long view helps him separate lasting truths from passing fashions.

Since he opened his agency on Madison Avenue in 1949, he says, only one change has been truly major. Television has become the most powerful way to sell most products.

Lasting methods, and hints rather than rules

Ogilvy believes other changes have been overstated by writers who like trendy labels. Take brand images, meaning the personality that people feel a brand has. He made the idea popular in 1953, but Claude Hopkins had described it twenty years earlier. Ogilvy also says most methods from his 1963 book still work. All over the world, people still buy products whose ads promise good value, beauty, good food, relief from pain or higher social standing. Some critics say that any method older than two years is out of date. Ogilvy replies that demonstrations and people talking to the camera still bring in sales.

He also denies that he lays down rules; he says he only reports how buyers react. For example, research suggests that commercials with celebrities persuade less than the average commercial. It also suggests that more people read black type on a white background than white type on black. He calls these hints, not rules.

Why share what he knows? He tells of a family of English doctors in the 1700s who delivered babies more safely than their rivals. They kept their invention, the forceps, secret until a curious student spied on them. Today doctors publish their discoveries, and Ogilvy does the same. It covers only what he has seen himself, so it says nothing about media, cable television or advertising in Japan.
