What is Hey, Whipple, Squeeze This: The Classic Guide to Creating Great Ads about?

Luke Sullivan and Sam Bennett ask how to make advertising that sells without annoying the people it interrupts, starting from the puzzle of the Mr. Whipple Charmin ads. The book follows the working life of a creative team: finding a central human truth and a one-adjective strategy, putting the pill inside the baloney, writing many versions of a line, and rebuilding one big idea across print, TV, radio, social media and live events. It also covers direct-response TV, radio craft, defending ideas against client fear, focus groups and idea-killing meetings, and building a portfolio to get into the business.

Free preview: Preface

Sullivan's Fantasy of Famous Mascots

Luke Sullivan opens his book with a joke. He tells the reader plainly that it is his own fantasy: a made-up scene written like the start of a TV ad.

In the first scene, a cute pink toy bear pops out of a basket of laundry. He is Snuggles, the bear from the fabric-softener ads, and he begins his sales pitch. He is shot down before he can finish. The second scene follows the same pattern. A woman opens her toilet and finds the Ty-D-Bowl Man, a tiny man in a boat who shows how clean the water already is. He starts to introduce himself, and he is shot down too. In the third scene, a grocery store owner scolds some women for squeezing toilet paper. The preface ends as the first shot misses him and breaks a jar of mayonnaise.

What the Joke Tells the Reader

Sullivan does not explain the fantasy, but his choice of targets is clear. Each one is a well-known advertising character who appears in an ordinary scene and starts a sales message. Each one is stopped in the middle of the pitch. The joke comes from someone who is tired of ads that interrupt people.

The scolding grocer also points ahead. He matches the way Chapter 1 describes Mr. Whipple, the grocer in the Charmin toilet-paper ads, and the book's title names Whipple too. That chapter explains why this kind of ad bothers Sullivan so much. So the preface sets the mood: this will be a funny, frank and opinionated book about making ads that people are glad to see.
