What is Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind about?

Al Ries and Jack Trout argue that in an overcommunicated society the real marketing battle is fought in the prospect's mind, so a product, company, place or person must claim one clear, simple position there instead of changing the product itself. They explain the mind's "product ladder" and its limit of about seven units, the advantage of being first, how a follower can find a "hole" or reposition the competition, and why names, line extension and "free-ride" thinking so often damage a position. The book tests these ideas on cases such as Avis against Hertz, 7-Up's "uncola", Volkswagen's "Think small", Xerox, Belgium's "five Amsterdams", Jamaica, a Catholic Church identity project and a person's career.

When talking makes things worse

Many people blame a "failure to communicate" for their troubles in business, government, labor and marriage. They believe problems would fade if people only sat down and talked. Al Ries and Jack Trout doubt this. In their view, communication itself has become the problem. They say people now live in the first overcommunicated society in history, where each year people send more messages and take in less.

Their answer is a new way of thinking about communication, called positioning. Most of their examples come from advertising, which they call the hardest kind of communication, because most people do not want it. The authors see that as a strength: if an idea works in advertising, it should work in politics or religion too.

The mind is the target

Positioning starts with something to offer: a product, a service, a company, a person, perhaps even yourself. But Ries and Trout stress that the work does not happen to the product. It happens in the prospect's mind, the mind of the person you want to reach. A new name, price or package may help, but the authors call these cosmetic changes, changes only to the surface. Their purpose is to win a useful place in the prospect's mind.

Most people, the authors say, date the idea to 1972, when the two of them wrote a series called "The Positioning Era" for Advertising Age. Old advertising words like "first" and "best" then gave way to comparisons. Sanka called itself "the third largest-selling coffee in America." Avis admitted it was only No. 2 and promised, "We try harder." 7-Up called itself "the uncola." The writers of such lines, the authors explain, hunt for holes in the market. Their warning: if you ignore these principles, your competitors will not.
