What is Purple Cow: Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable about?

Purple Cow asks why advertising that once sold ordinary products reliably now fails, and what a business should build instead. Seth Godin argues that the TV-industrial complex has ended and that marketing must be built into a product remarkable enough for early adopters and sneezers in a small niche to spread it by word of mouth. He tests this with cases such as the Aeron chair, Poilane bread, Krispy Kreme and JetBlue, and with ideas like going to the edges, the Cow cycle and the claim that very good is not remarkable, then closes with reader-submitted examples of remarkable organizations from 2008.

From five Ps to a Purple Cow

For years, marketers have used a checklist called the Ps of marketing. Godin says people talk about five, but his own list has eight: product, pricing, promotion, positioning, publicity, packaging, pass-along and permission. The Ps help a company check that all the parts of its offer fit together. Soft meals sold to older people that taste like baby food are an example of a mismatch, and the message fails. In the past, a company that got all its Ps right would probably succeed, though nothing was certain.

Godin says this is no longer enough. He adds a new P, the Purple Cow. To explain it, he tells of a drive through France. His family loved the storybook cows beside the road. Within twenty minutes, they stopped looking. Even perfect cows become boring when you keep seeing them. A purple cow would catch the eye, though only for a while. So a Purple Cow means something remarkable: worth noticing and worth talking about. Godin says his book explains why, what and how to be remarkable.

Build the remarkable into the product

Godin says a boring product is invisible. He calls it a brown cow. He also says being remarkable cannot be added at the end. The product or service itself must be worth noticing. If it is not, advertising cannot rescue it. David Packard, quoted at the start of the book, said marketing matters too much to leave to one department.

Godin then names the old system he believes has ended. The TV-industrial complex was a system in which three things fed each other: buyers who wanted more, TV advertising, and companies that grew by spending more on marketing each year. Today's buyer, he says, is a post-consumption consumer. This person has what they need, wants little, and has no time to study what a company worked hard to make.

Godin calls these his bold claims. He believes companies can no longer sell directly to the masses, and that the old ways are finished. His advice is short: "Stop advertising and start innovating."

Before, during and after advertising

Godin describes three stages. Before advertising, people talked about products that solved their problems. The best vegetable seller at the market had a crowded booth. During advertising, rising wealth, strong wants and television created what he calls a magic formula: advertise to every consumer and sales go up. After advertising, he says, marketing is close to the start again. But new networks now let remarkable ideas spread much faster than old word of mouth. Busy people ignore ads, yet they still search hard for things that solve their problems.

His sliced bread story shows the middle stage. In 1912, Otto Frederick Rohwedder invented a bread-slicing machine, and it failed completely. Godin says that, as the advertising age began, a good product with poor marketing had little chance. About twenty years later, a new brand called Wonder sold sliced bread with its own packaging and ads, and it caught on. Godin credits the packaging and ads, not the clever idea itself. He gives no sales figures.
