What is Contagious: Why Things Catch On about?

Jonah Berger examines why people pass some products, ideas, and stories to others while overlooking many alternatives. Through cases including a hidden bar, Kit Kat's coffee campaign, observable public behavior, and product-centered stories, he develops six distinct mechanisms of social transmission and shows why attention alone is insufficient.

A Sandwich That Carries the Restaurant

When Howard Wein helped launch Barclay Prime in Philadelphia, serving good food was only part of his problem. The city already had expensive restaurants, and a new one could disappear among them. He needed a reason for someone who had eaten there to bring it up in another conversation. His answer was a cheesesteak priced at one hundred dollars, made with ingredients including Kobe beef and lobster and presented as an experience. The familiar sandwich made the departure from an ordinary cheesesteak immediately understandable: people could explain what was surprising without first explaining the product itself.

The price attracted attention, but the idea also communicated something about the restaurant. This was an expensive place willing to approach food creatively. Someone retelling the sandwich story was therefore carrying a message about Barclay Prime, even without intending to advertise it. Berger uses the case to open his central question: why do some products, behaviors, and ideas become things people pass along? Better quality, attractive prices, and large advertising budgets can help explain success, but they do not explain every difference in what catches on.

Why a Recommendation Has Advantages

Conversation has advantages that a paid advertisement does not automatically possess. A friend recommending a restaurant is usually understood to be sharing an experience rather than delivering a sales pitch. The recommendation also tends to reach someone for a reason: the friend knows what that person likes, where they live, or what problem they are trying to solve. Persuasion and targeting work together. An advertisement can buy exposure, while a personal recommendation often arrives with both a reason to believe it and a reason to care about it.

Beyond Online Counts and Famous Messengers

Berger also challenges the assumption that social transmission mainly means online virality. Much of the conversation he describes happens in ordinary life, where people discuss meals, purchases, work, and advice. An online sharing count makes some activity visible, but visibility is not the same as completeness. He likewise questions explanations that place nearly all responsibility on a few unusually influential people. The properties of the message or product matter because ordinary recipients must have their own reasons to keep passing it along after the first introduction.

An Ordinary Blender Becomes Remarkable

Blendtec provides a second way into that argument. A blender might appear too ordinary to generate much conversation, but demonstrations of its ability to destroy unexpected objects made its strength startling. The spectacle and the product benefit were connected: the machine doing the surprising work was the machine being sold. This extends the restaurant example. A business does not necessarily need an inherently glamorous category; it may discover something worth discussing inside an ordinary product and make that feature easy to observe and describe.

Six Independent Reasons to Share

The book organizes these recurring features into STEPPS: Social Currency, Triggers, Emotion, Public, Practical Value, and Stories. The chapters explain how sharing can improve the speaker's image, how surroundings bring ideas to mind, how activation encourages transmission, how visible behavior invites imitation, how useful information helps others, and how narratives carry messages. These are relatively independent principles, not six compulsory ingredients in a guaranteed recipe. The rest of the book asks how each works, so a reader can understand why a particular example spreads instead of merely copying its surface appearance.
