What is David and Goliath about?
Malcolm Gladwell asks why people so often misjudge power: the size, money or force that makes an opponent look like a giant can hide weakness, and a disadvantage can hide strength. Starting from a fresh reading of the Bible's duel in the Elah Valley, he builds an inverted-U curve, where more resources help only up to a point, and tests it on a girls' basketball press, class size, selective colleges, dyslexia, wartime bombing, the Birmingham civil rights campaign, Northern Ireland, California's Three Strikes law, Le Chambon and the Vietnam War. His threads are "desirable difficulties" and the principle of legitimacy, argued through case studies, some of which he admits rest on mixed evidence.

The Famous Duel in the Elah Valley
Gladwell opens with the Bible story of David and Goliath. In the eleventh century BCE, the Philistines march up the Elah Valley against King Saul's Israelites. The two armies camp on facing ridges. Whoever attacks first must cross the valley and climb uphill into the enemy, which would be deadly, so nobody moves.
To break the deadlock, the Philistines send out Goliath, a giant at least six foot nine, dressed in bronze armor. He calls for single combat, an old custom in which each side chooses one fighter, so that a duel replaces a bloody battle. No Israelite steps forward until David, a young shepherd, volunteers. He tells Saul he has killed lions and bears that attacked his flock, and Saul agrees.
Gladwell says his book is about ordinary people who face giants, meaning any powerful opponent, from armies to disability, misfortune and oppression. He has two ideas. Fights against huge odds can produce greatness. And people usually misread such fights, because giants are often weaker than they look.
How David Really Fought
Gladwell says the usual telling gets almost everything wrong. Ancient armies had three kinds of fighters: cavalry on horses or in chariots, infantry (armored foot soldiers with swords), and projectile warriors, who struck from a distance, such as archers and slingers. A slinger whirled a stone in a leather pouch on a cord and let it fly, and in skilled hands it was deadly. The historian Baruch Halpern argues that the three types balanced one another, like rock, paper, scissors. A slinger could hit a slow, armored foot soldier from far away.
Goliath was heavy infantry, wearing more than a hundred pounds of armor. When he shouted "come to me," he expected a close fight with another armored man. Saul thought the same and offered David armor and a sword. David refused. Without armor he could move fast, and he would fight as he had fought wild animals: from a distance. Eitan Hirsch, a ballistics expert in the Israeli army, calculated that an expert's stone from thirty-five meters would hit Goliath's head at thirty-four meters per second, a little over one second after release. Gladwell says that equals the stopping power of a fair-size modern handgun. In his view, once David took out a stone, the soldiers on both ridges would have expected the slinger to win.
Giants Are Not What They Seem
Gladwell sees two mistakes in the usual reading of the duel. The first is Saul's: he judged power only by size and strength. Gladwell argues that power can also come from speed, surprise and refusing to follow the rules, and that people still make Saul's error today, in schooling and in fighting crime.
The second mistake is about Goliath himself. The Bible account has strange details. A helper, called an attendant, walked ahead of him carrying a shield. Goliath asked David to come to him, and the text stresses how slowly he moved. He also mocked David for bringing "sticks," though David held only one staff. Gladwell reports that many medical experts now believe Goliath had acromegaly. This disease comes from a non-cancerous tumor in the pituitary gland that causes too much growth hormone, which could explain Goliath's size. The tumor can also press on the nerves to the eyes and cause poor or double vision. Gladwell suggests that the attendant was guiding a man who could barely see, and that Goliath saw two sticks.
For Gladwell, the lesson is that the condition that made Goliath look frightening may also have made him easy to beat.
