What is Pre-Suasion about?
Robert Cialdini asks what a persuader can do in the moment just before a request so that people are ready to say yes. He argues that whatever holds attention at that instant feels more important and more causal, and that openers, cues and associations steer which ideas a listener reaches for. The guide follows this through attention attractors and magnetizers, the six principles of influence, the seventh principle of unity, ethics, and how to make a shift last.

Why Evidence Now Matters
Robert Cialdini opens with a change in how big organizations make choices. For a long time, he says, even top leaders trusted gut feeling, personal experience and stories. Now business, government, schools, the military and sports teams want "evidence-based decision making." They value data experts and behavioral scientists, who study human behavior through research.
Cialdini, a social psychologist, says he saw this change up close. His book Influence came out in 1984 and sold badly at first. His publisher even stopped paying to advertise it. Four or five years later, sales began to climb, and the book became a bestseller. Cialdini thinks the reason was "the times." Evidence-based thinking was spreading, and Influence gathered scientific evidence about persuasion in one place.
He names two more helpers. One is behavioral economics, a newer way of studying money choices. It borrowed from social psychology the idea that people often act without logic, and also its method of randomized, controlled experiments, which put people into groups by chance so the groups can be fairly compared. Some colleagues are angry that behavioral economists took credit for findings social psychology had already made. Cialdini does not share the anger. He says the overlap is small, and the borrowing raised social psychology's standing with decision makers. The other helper is that social psychologists now write for the general public, a change he hopes Influence helped to start.
The Moment Before the Message
Cialdini says Pre-Suasion adds something new to this research: timing. It looks at what skilled communicators do just before they deliver a message, so that people accept it.
He admits that older voices already praised preparation. The Chinese military thinker Sun Tzu said battles are won before they are fought. Consultants are taught to win a client's trust as an advisor before they seek the client's business. Dale Carnegie said that real interest in other people wins friends much faster than trying to make others interested in oneself. Cialdini calls this wise advice, but it has a cost: such preparation takes days, weeks or months.
His question is different. Can a person also raise the chance of success in the very last instant before a request? Cialdini says yes, and that the evidence is already established. The Roman speaker Cicero once cried out about the times and the customs, the long-running forces that shape how people act. Cialdini says his book points to a source of influence that is closer and much easier to manage: "Oh, the moment!"
