A Paper Boat in the Rain
In the fall of 1957, a week of rain flooded Derry, Maine, and the power went out. The narrator says the terror began with a paper boat in a flooded gutter and would not end for twenty-eight years. Derry, he adds, is good at forgetting its disasters.
George Denbrough was six. His brother Bill, ten, was sick in bed, and he had folded the paper boat for George. Bill stuttered badly, but the brothers were close. Bill sent George to the cellar for wax to waterproof the boat. George feared the dark cellar, where he imagined a monster he called It, but he went anyway. Then George kissed Bill on the cheek, and Bill told him to be careful. George ran out into the rain. Bill never saw him again.
The Clown in the Storm Drain
That afternoon in 1957, George chased the boat down Witcham Street until the water carried it into an open storm drain. Inside, he saw a clown holding his boat and some balloons. The clown said his name was Mr Bob Gray, or Pennywise the Dancing Clown, so they were no longer strangers. George remembered his father's rule about strangers, but he reached for the boat. The clown grabbed his arm, and George was killed.
A neighbor, Dave Gardener, reached him forty-five seconds after the first scream, but George was already dead. Dave saw only a screaming boy, no clown. An hour later, George's mother was in the hospital, Bill sat silent in bed, and their father cried. The paper boat sailed on through the drains and out of Derry.
