What is The Way of the Superior Man: A Spiritual Guide to Mastering the Challenges of Women, Work, and Sexual Desire about?

David Deida offers short lessons for men on living with purpose, staying present in close relationships and handling strong drives with integrity. In his view, a man should put his deepest purpose first, face fear instead of avoiding it, keep his word, and meet a partner's moods with steady love; he frames this through his idea of 'masculine' and 'feminine' energy, which he says is not the same as being a man or a woman. These are his own views, drawn from his practice, and they are often debated.

The man Deida wants to describe

David Deida wrote this book in 1997 for a kind of man he sees as newly appearing. In his view, this man is strong and clear about his direction, and he lives by his own values with humor. At the same time he is sensitive, playful and open in spirit. He is not a bully, and he is not a soft man who never takes a stand. Deida says this man has accepted both his tough side and his tender side, and he no longer clings to either one.

First, he says, roles were fixed. Men earned the money, and women looked after the home. In the second stage, which he links to the United States in the 1960s, men became more gentle and carefree, and women became more independent and ambitious. Deida agrees that this made life better. But he calls it only a middle step. His claim is that equality grew while passion faded. This is his own reading of the times.

His explanation is sexual polarity. This is the pull that, in his view, runs between a masculine pole and a feminine pole, like the poles of a magnet. Deida says everyone has both kinds of energy, and almost anyone can use either one in a given moment. But if two partners insist on being the same, even in close moments, he believes the spark fades. He argues that in those moments one partner must take the masculine side and the other the feminine side. He says the roles can switch, and do not depend on whether a person is a man or a woman.

Essence, mission and love

Deida uses the phrase sexual essence for a person's deepest core, which can be more masculine, more feminine, or balanced. For him, a masculine core is driven most by a mission, a sense of purpose and freedom. A feminine core is most fed by love flowing in close relationships. He points to sports and romance stories as signs of these two needs, though he admits people enjoy both.

He says about 90% of people have a clear masculine or feminine core, and about 10% are balanced. This figure comes from his own experience. He adds that a balanced person may not care much about passion, and such a reader may find the book useless or even upsetting.

The book is written for people with a masculine core and for their partners. Deida believes that when people hide their true core to fit in, they pay a price. He says that people with a feminine core who push themselves to work in a masculine style for years may suffer in their bodies. He says people with a masculine core who play down their purpose to fit in lose touch with their deepest truth. In his view, love means being open, and a person who hides their core stays closed. He also thinks many people who call themselves balanced are really holding back what they want.

Who the book is for

Deida names a question that he thinks many men with a masculine core face: their mission may matter more to them than their relationship, yet they still want a full, lively partnership. The book sets out to answer that.

He writes about the most common case, a man with a masculine core and a female partner. He asks readers in other pairings to change the wording for themselves, and he says the ideas still apply. He also says the book is for readers who already respect all genders and sexual preferences, and who see men and women as equals.

His goal is a next step: equality and respect stay, while both people enjoy the difference between masculine and feminine. He rejects two pictures. One is the harsh man with all spine and no heart. The other is the caring man with all heart and no spine. In his view, a man should join heart and spine, and then go beyond both by relaxing into the open present moment. Deida says this takes a new kind of courage, and he calls it the way of the superior man.
