What is In Sheep's Clothing: Understanding and Dealing with Manipulative People about?
Clinical psychologist George Simon asks why people who feel pushed around, guilty and confused by a spouse, boss, co-worker or child so often cannot see that they are in a fight. He argues that most manipulation is covert aggression, hidden fighting by people with too little conscience rather than too much fear, and he profiles it through case stories such as Joe, Al, Betty, James, Mr. Jackson, Bill and Amanda. The book then names the common tactics (minimization, denial, rationalization, diversion, guilt-tripping, shaming, playing the victim) and teaches tools such as accepting no excuses, judging actions rather than intentions, setting personal limits, making direct requests and win-win bargaining.

The Wolf in Sheep's Clothing
George Simon, a clinical psychologist, opens with four familiar kinds of people. A supervisor says he supports you, yet blocks every chance you have to move up. A co-worker quietly works against you so the boss will favor her. A spouse says "I love you" but seems to control your whole life. A child always knows exactly what to say or do to get his way.
Simon says people like this fit the old saying about a wolf in sheep's clothing: someone who looks gentle and harmless but is really out to get what he wants, whatever it costs you. They can seem charming and friendly, yet underneath, he says, they plan carefully and show little mercy. They push hard for what they want but hide the fight. That is why Simon calls them covert-aggressive personalities. "Covert" means hidden.
Simon says he began to focus on this problem more than 20 years ago. Several patients came to him with depression, anxiety or insecurity, and in time their troubles turned out to be linked to a manipulative person in their lives. They told similar stories. Dealing with that person made them feel crazy. They did not trust the person but could not say why. They got angry, then somehow ended up feeling guilty. Complaining about the person's behavior left them defending their own. They said yes when they meant no.
Simon admits that his early efforts did not work well. His therapies eased patients' pain a little but never gave them the power to change the relationship. With the manipulators themselves, nothing worked. So he began to study the problem again, carefully.
What the Book Sets Out to Do
Simon's main claim is that covert aggression is at the heart of most manipulation. He also argues that some common beliefs about why people act as they do make people easy targets. The book has three aims.
The first is to help readers recognize a disturbed character, and the covert-aggressive personality in particular. Simon uses stories based on real cases to show how these people work. The second is to explain the tactics they use to deceive and control others, along with the weak spots in a victim's own character that a manipulator is likely to use. The third is to give rules and tools for taking back your power. Victims often wear themselves out trying to control the manipulator. Simon wants them to put that energy where they really have power, into their own behavior.
The Author's Note, written in 2010, explains why Simon revised the book. Since 1996, when it first came out, hundreds of people had written or called him. Many said that once they dropped some old myths, they saw that their gut feeling about a person had been right all along. Therapists at his seminars, he says, helped their clients better once they dropped their old ideas.
The new edition says more about character disturbance, which Simon describes as too little self-restraint. He sets it against being neurotic: held back by too much fear, guilt and shame. In Simon's view, seriously neurotic people are now quite rare, while problem levels of character disturbance are becoming more and more common.
