What is Economics in One Lesson about?

Henry Hazlitt asks why popular economic policies keep winning support even though, in his argument, they leave most people worse off. His answer is a single lesson, built on Bastiat's seen and unseen effects: trace a policy's results over time and for every group, not just the visible, immediate winners. He tests it on the broken window, public works, tariffs, farm parity prices, price ceilings, rent control, minimum wages, unions, inflation and saving, and closes with a 1978 look at the redistributive state.

Why Hazlitt Wrote This Book

Henry Hazlitt opens his 1946 preface with a warning. False ideas about economics have spread so far that they are almost the new accepted view. What holds them back, he says, is that they contradict each other. People who start from the same false idea split into rival "schools". In practical matters, he argues, nobody can be wrong in a fully consistent way. Sooner or later each school sees where its idea leads and softens its conclusions.

Almost every major government, Hazlitt adds, is shaped by some of these mistakes. So he thinks the quickest way to learn economics is to take the errors apart, above all the central error behind them. He claims no new ideas. Many "brilliant" modern ideas, he argues, are old errors brought back.

His Method, Debts and Limits

Hazlitt expects the people he criticizes to call his book "classical" or "orthodox" in order to dismiss it. He accepts the labels. A seeker of truth, he says, is open to old and new ideas alike but does not chase novelty. He cites Morris R. Cohen: dismissing every earlier thinker leaves no ground to hope that one's own work will matter to others.

Hazlitt names three debts. The frame of the book comes from an essay by Frederic Bastiat, nearly a century old, about what is seen and what is not seen. Philip Wicksteed shaped the chapters on wages and the last chapter. Ludwig von Mises shaped the account of how monetary inflation spreads.

Hazlitt does not name the writers he attacks, such as Karl Marx and Lord Keynes. He targets ideas in the popular form that governments act on. He uses few statistics because they age fast and would make the book too long. He writes for readers new to economics.
