What is The Wealth of Nations about?

Adam Smith asks what makes a nation well supplied and how its wealth grows, beginning with the division of labour in a pin factory and following it through markets, money, prices, wages, profit and rent, the building of capital by saving, and the uneven economic history of Europe. He then attacks the mercantile system, arguing that wealth is the goods money buys rather than gold, that import bans, export bounties and colonial monopolies misdirect capital, and that each person pursuing their own gain is led by an invisible hand toward a system of natural liberty. The last book sets out what a government must pay for, namely defence, justice, public works and schooling, and tests taxes and public debt against four rules.

Free preview: Introduction and Plan of the Work

What makes a nation well supplied

Adam Smith says every nation lives on its yearly work. All that its people use comes from that work, or from goods bought abroad with it. A nation is well supplied when this produce is large for the number of people sharing it.

Smith names two causes: the skill of workers, and the share of people doing useful work. He thinks skill matters more. In hunting and fishing societies everyone able to work does so, yet they stay very poor. In a thriving nation many people do no work, but the produce is so large that a thrifty labourer can live better than any hunter.

The plan of the five books

Smith then outlines the five books. Book I asks why labour becomes more productive and how its produce is shared among social ranks. Book II studies capital stock, the savings that put workers to work. Book III explains why European policy since Rome's fall has favoured towns over farming. Book IV examines the theories of political economy that grew from such policies. Book V covers the ruler's income: what government must spend, how people can pay, and how public debts affect real wealth.
