The Road to Serfdom — Book Summary
សង្ខេបសៀវភៅ «ផ្លូវឆ្ពោះទៅរកទាសភាព»
What is The Road to Serfdom about?
Written in wartime Britain as a warning to "the Socialists of All Parties," this political book asks how well-meant plans for a centrally directed economy could end up destroying the freedom they promise. Hayek argues that central planning must replace competition and prices, that discretionary power erodes the Rule of Law, and that totalitarian systems tend to lift the least scrupulous to the top. This edition adds his 1956 and 1976 prefaces and closes with a proposal for a limited international federation instead of international economic planning.

A Political Book, and Honest About It
Hayek first tells readers what kind of book this is. When a scholar of society writes about politics, he says, the first duty is to admit it openly. He could have given it a grander label, an essay in social philosophy, but he plainly calls it a political book.
Hayek adds a second duty. Everything in the argument grows out of certain basic beliefs, which he calls ultimate values. He wants them stated so clearly that readers can see what the whole case rests on and judge it for themselves.
Why Hayek Wrote It, Despite the Cost
Hayek insists that his views do not serve his own interests. He sees no reason why the society he prefers would benefit him more than most people. His socialist colleagues even tell him that, as an economist, he would hold a more important post in the society he opposes, if he accepted their views. He held those views himself when young. Writing the book will cost him: it may upset friends, pull him from work he values more, and harm how his academic research is received.
Still, he treats it as a duty. Most economists had been absorbed by war work and silenced by official posts, leaving public debate to amateurs, cranks and people pushing a favorite cure. The core argument first appeared in an April 1938 article in the Contemporary Review, later enlarged into a 1939 pamphlet for the University of Chicago Press.
