Why Nations Fail — Book Summary
សង្ខេបសៀវភៅ «ហេតុអ្វីប្រទេសជាតិបរាជ័យ»
What is Why Nations Fail about?
Daron Acemoglu and James Robinson argue that long-run prosperity depends chiefly on how political and economic institutions distribute power and opportunity. Through comparisons such as the two sides of Nogales and historical turning points across continents, they contrast inclusive institutions with extractive ones and explain why elites often resist creative destruction even when change could make society richer.

Preface — 1
Why can people with talent and ambition face such different possibilities depending on where they live? Daron Acemoglu and James Robinson answer by examining institutions: the rules and arrangements that shape economic activity and the distribution of political power. Their central argument is that widespread, lasting prosperity depends on institutions that let broad sections of society participate, protect their opportunities, and constrain people who would use power mainly to enrich themselves. This is the authors' historical explanation, developed in a book published in 2012. Its descriptions of countries and predictions belong to that publication context.
Preface — 2
The opening setting is the Arab Spring. Protesters in Egypt connected poor services and limited opportunities to corruption, repression, and concentrated political power. The authors take that connection seriously. Replacing one leader, however, need not change the arrangements that made exploitation possible. A revolution can transfer control of the same machinery to a new group. The question is whether ordinary people acquire durable influence over how it works.
Preface — 3
This reading develops five abilities: distinguish inclusive institutions from the mere existence of markets or elections; explain why powerful groups may resist changes that would increase national prosperity; understand how historical turning points produce different outcomes; recognize the feedback that preserves either inclusion or extraction; and assess reform proposals without expecting a universal recipe. The book covers many societies, but the purpose is to understand these mechanisms through representative histories, with shorter comparisons that test their reach and limits.
