What is Make It Stick about?

Brown, Roediger, and McDaniel examine why familiar material can still be hard to recall, and how retrieval, spacing, mixed practice, and feedback can build more durable understanding. Classroom research and accounts of skilled practice clarify the limits of productive difficulty, learning-style claims, and memory techniques.

Explanation 1

A lesson can be easy to follow and difficult to remember. Those are different problems. A clear explanation gives us a way into an unfamiliar idea, but the feeling that we understand while the explanation is in front of us does not tell us whether we can use it next week. Make It Stick asks readers to judge learning by that later performance: can we bring the knowledge back, explain it accurately, and recognize a situation in which it helps?

Explanation 2

Peter Brown, Henry Roediger and Mark McDaniel approach this question through stories of learners and research in cognitive psychology. Their 2014 book challenges several habits that feel productive, especially rereading the same material repeatedly and practicing one task until it becomes smooth. The challenge is not that effort is unnecessary. It is that the kind and timing of effort matter. We can spend a long time studying in ways that mostly improve how familiar the page looks.

Explanation 3

The authors also make a choice about how to teach their own argument. They return to central ideas across different examples rather than mention each technique once and leave it behind. A surgeon's reflection, a student's quiz and an actor's rehearsal can reveal different parts of the same principle. The repetition has a purpose when it helps us recognize the principle under a new surface. It becomes useful knowledge when we can explain that connection ourselves.

Explanation 4

Keep one task in mind as you read: something you want to know or do well enough to use without being walked through every step. It might involve studying a subject, mastering a work process or preparing a performance. The book's question is what practice would make that ability durable. Reading gives you the argument; experimenting with the methods and checking the results is the next part of learning it.
