Man’s Search for Meaning — Book Summary
សង្ខេបសៀវភៅ «ការស្វែងរកអត្ថន័យនៃជីវិត»
What is Man’s Search for Meaning about?
Viktor Frankl examines how people can find meaning when suffering, loss, and uncertainty strip away the life they expected. He connects his experience in Nazi concentration camps with logotherapy, his approach to helping people recognize meaning through action, love and experience, and their response to suffering they cannot prevent.

Meaning and survival
Harold S. Kushner introduces the book as an account of survival and an exploration of what can make survival matter. Frankl lost almost everything that had supported his former life. Yet thoughts of his wife, unfinished work, and a future in which he could explain his experiences sometimes gave him something to live toward. Kushner sees these commitments as central to the book's lasting force. A person may have little power over events and still have a reason to respond to them with care or courage.
This is not an explanation of why every survivor lived or every victim died. Kushner acknowledges that many prisoners who wanted intensely to live were killed. Hope did not prevent murder, and having a purpose did not remove hunger or disease. The question he draws from Frankl is how some people found inner strength when ordinary supports disappeared. That question concerns the possibilities of human response, rather than a rule for deciding who deserves to survive.
Sources of meaning
Kushner identifies three broad sources of meaning: doing something worthwhile, loving another person, and facing unavoidable difficulty with courage. They matter because meaning cannot depend entirely on comfort, status, or achievement. His example of people who lose direction after retirement makes this clear. Work had organized their days and made them feel needed. Once it ended, they struggled to recognize another reason to participate in life. Their problem was not simply a shortage of entertainment. It was the loss of something they experienced as worth doing.
The memoir gives the later discussion of therapy its human setting. Without the camp experience, the theory could sound like an abstract demand to be strong. With it, the reader can see what Frankl was asking of himself as well as of others. Kushner also offers an explicitly religious reading: he understands the book as an affirmation that life can retain purpose despite tragedy. That is the foreword writer's interpretation. The following sections develop Frankl's own account of responsibility, including his insistence that a therapist must not decide a patient's beliefs for them.
