What is Set Boundaries, Find Peace about?

This book looks at why so many people feel overwhelmed, resentful and burned out when they cannot say no or tell others what they need. Therapist Nedra Glover Tawwab sorts boundaries into porous, rigid and healthy types and into six areas (physical, sexual, intellectual, emotional, material and time), then teaches a two-part method of saying the need clearly and following it with action. She uses client stories and sample phrases to cover guilt, pushback, ultimatums, trauma, self-boundaries, and limits with family, partners, friends, coworkers and technology.

Boundary problems wear a disguise

Nedra Glover Tawwab has been a therapist for fourteen years. She says people do not walk into therapy knowing they have boundary issues. The problem shows up as something else: poor self-care, fights with other people, trouble with time, or worry about social media.

Tawwab names the problem for her clients: "You have an issue with boundaries." Then the work begins. Clients find where their limits were crossed, learn to tell others their limits, and deal with the guilt and discomfort that follow. Her Instagram post "Signs That You Need Boundaries" went viral. It lists signs such as feeling overwhelmed, feeling burned out, and having no time for yourself. She says about 85 percent of the questions in her weekly Instagram Q&As are about boundaries. That figure is from her own followers, not a study. Tawwab says she has had her own trouble with boundaries for most of her life, and she still works on it every day.

Fear, clarity, and a simple formula

Tawwab says the top reason people avoid limits is fear that someone will get mad. She believes this fear comes from negative thoughts and stories in our heads, not from facts. She also learned that fixing other people did not help them. It got in the way of the work they needed to do themselves. When a relative texted asking her to help fix someone, she replied: "This is not my job. And it's not your job either."

Tawwab says family is where she has found it hardest to set limits, because families have unspoken rules. She admits it can seem worse to risk making someone mad than to have an uncomfortable talk. Yet she says she could have saved many relationships if she had only spoken up. People cannot know what you want, she says, so making it clear is your job. Her short rule is "Clarity saves relationships." Her examples range from "I will not be around you when you're drinking" to "Please take your shoes off when you come in my house." Her book gives a formula: notice the boundary issue, say what you need, and follow with action. She warns the early steps are uncomfortable but get easier with practice. She also lists eight reasons people do not respect your limits, such as apologizing for them, speaking in unsure words, and thinking that saying them once is enough. She notes that the client stories in the book are fictional versions of her real sessions, with names and details changed.
