What is The Cases That Haunt Us about?
John Douglas and Mark Olshaker revisit notorious murders and the Lindbergh kidnapping to examine what evidence and offender behavior can reveal. They compare competing explanations, question investigative failures and show how publicity, prejudice and uncertain evidence can keep a case unresolved. The book presents the authors’ assessments in the supplied 2000 edition, including conclusions they cannot prove.

Begin with the crime
Why do some crimes remain disturbing long after the event? An unknown killer is part of the answer, but not the whole answer. A case can end in a conviction and still leave serious doubts about what happened. A familiar story can also become so powerful that people stop asking whether the evidence supports it. John Douglas and Mark Olshaker examine famous cases to show how this happens and how investigators might think more carefully.
Douglas approaches the cases through criminal profiling: using the victim's circumstances and the offender's actions to suggest what kind of person may have committed the crime. This is a way to develop and test leads. It is not a machine that produces a name. The proper starting point is the crime itself. Choosing a favorite suspect first and then finding details that seem to fit reverses the process. Almost any elaborate theory can sound convincing if contrary facts are left out.
What the method can establish
The questions therefore extend beyond who had a possible motive. Why this victim? Why this place and time? Which actions were needed to carry out the crime, and which appear to serve an emotional purpose? What might the offender have done before and afterward? Answers must be checked against physical evidence, opportunity and other explanations. A person can resemble a profile without being guilty, while a surprising detail may require the profile to change.
The authors do not promise to solve every mystery. They offer judgments, sometimes very strong ones, from incomplete historical records. The reader's task is to distinguish a documented event, an inference drawn from it and a possibility that still lacks support. This distinction becomes especially important when a dramatic story offers the satisfaction of certainty. Throughout the book, the cost of getting the story wrong includes both a missed offender and an innocent person placed under suspicion.
