What is The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference about?
Malcolm Gladwell investigates why some products, messages and behaviors spread rapidly after small changes. Through cases including Hush Puppies, educational television, New York crime and Airwalk, he develops three explanations: influential carriers, memorable messages and the power of context. The afterword adds limits involving peer isolation and communication overload.

A Revival Nobody Planned
Hush Puppies looked like a fading shoe brand in the early 1990s. Its classic shoes sold mainly through small shops, and the company was considering ending the line. Then young people in parts of downtown Manhattan began wearing them because they looked unlike current fashion. Designers noticed. Shops and fashion shows spread the look further. Sales rose from roughly thirty thousand pairs a year to four hundred and thirty thousand in 1995, then multiplied again. The company had not planned this revival. A choice made by a small group became a national trend through connections the company did not control.
Malcolm Gladwell places this surprising revival beside the sharp fall in New York City crime during the 1990s. The subjects differ, but he sees a common shape: a condition persists, a small change occurs, and then the result moves dramatically. His question is why change sometimes behaves this way instead of advancing steadily. He calls the moment when a process crosses into rapid change a tipping point. Fashion is not literally an infection. The disease comparison is a way to investigate transmission, the people involved, and the conditions that let a change grow.
A Threshold Changes the Pattern
Three features organize the book: behavior can spread between people, small causes can have large effects, and growth can change abruptly at a threshold. Gladwell uses repeated doubling to challenge the expectation that results must be similar in size to their causes. A small starting amount can become enormous after enough rounds of growth. The important issue is not simply that something starts small. It is whether each round produces enough new activity to keep the process expanding.
Following the Proposed Mechanism
A hypothetical example in the endnotes makes that distinction clearer. Imagine an infection that lasts one day, where a sick person meets fifty people and each contact has a two percent chance of transmission. On average, each case replaces itself with one new case. Increase contacts slightly and the outbreak grows; reduce them slightly and it declines. The example is a simplified model, not a forecast for a real disease. Its teaching point is that the same small adjustment can matter much more near a critical threshold than far away from it.
The book applies this way of thinking to products, education, crime, groups and harmful behavior. It also considers rival explanations. New York's crime decline, for example, has been linked to policing, changes in drug markets, population patterns and employment. Gladwell argues that broad gradual trends do not fully explain the city's sudden shift. That is the question driving his investigation, rather than proof that one small intervention explains everything. The reader's task is to follow how each case connects an observed change to a proposed mechanism, and to notice when that connection is a hypothesis rather than a demonstrated cause.
