What is This Is Marketing: You Can't Be Seen Until You Learn to See about?
Seth Godin asks how marketing can help people make a change that matters, rather than merely buy broad attention. He starts with a specific group's worldview and desired change, then shows how stories, status, trust, permission, and useful connections can help an idea spread. Cases ranging from reading glasses in India to online communities show both the possibilities and the limits of this approach.

1. Marketing makes change
Marketing surrounds ordinary life, so it can be hard to notice how much it shapes what people see and do. Godin asks readers to use that power deliberately. A good idea or well-made product does not automatically reach the people it could help. People may distrust change, prefer familiar habits, or wait for someone else to try first. Marketing is the work of helping an idea find its people and become part of their lives. That work extends beyond selling products: a speaker, fundraiser, candidate, or employee who hopes to change someone’s mind is also marketing. The question that should guide the work is whom it can help.
2. Grow roots before height
Godin compares a project to a sunflower. Visible height—followers, sales, or market share—depends on less visible roots. Those roots are the dreams, desires, and communities of the people the project serves. Chasing size without them produces noise, while even generous work must be shared in a way people can recognize and choose. A marketer has made an impact when people change, not merely when something is built. The market helps decide whether an offer is better: the promise must resonate with a listener and be kept in the real experience. This is why the book begins by asking the marketer to see other people before seeking attention.
