What is The 33 Strategies of War about?

Robert Greene asks how people can face the rivalry and conflict of everyday life with the planning of a "strategic warrior" instead of avoiding fights, lashing out in anger or turning sly. He treats Sun-tzu's idea of winning without bloodshed as the root of 33 strategies that move from mastering one's own mind and structuring a group to defensive, offensive and "dirty" warfare. Each strategy is built on a historical case, such as Napoleon at Austerlitz, Hannibal at Cannae, Gandhi's Salt March or Grant against McClernand, and most close with a Reversal that marks where the approach fails.

Why Greene Says People Need Strategy

Robert Greene begins with a warning. Modern culture teaches fairness, teamwork and peace, he says, but real life is full of conflict. Some rivals attack openly. Others seem friendly but work against people in secret.

Greene argues that people cannot switch off their aggressive impulses. Avoiding all conflict, lashing out in anger and turning sly all fail in the long run, because none of them is under rational control. He offers a different model, the strategic warrior. This person thinks ahead, chooses which fights to avoid, controls emotion and fights with indirect moves.

Greene says this idea comes from war. He calls the ancient Chinese writer Sun-tzu perhaps the greatest strategist of all. In Greene's reading, the heart of Sun-tzu's art was winning without bloodshed: confuse and frustrate the other side until it breaks down mentally. Victory then costs far less.

Ideals of the Strategic Warrior

Greene lists six ideals for daily life. The first is to see things as they are. Fear makes people overrate the enemy, anger makes them rash, and success makes them overconfident. Emotion cannot be removed, he says, but it can be noticed and corrected for.

Another ideal separates strategy from tactics. Tactics means handling the fight at hand. Strategy means planning the whole campaign. Greene says most people are only tacticians. He urges readers to rise above the battlefield and decide when to fight and when to walk away.

He also notes that the Greeks worshipped Athena, goddess of clever war, and despised Ares, god of brutal war. Greene wants readers to value the thinking that war demands, not its violence. The chapters that follow, he says, are not rules to copy but aids to judgment.
