Blue Ocean Strategy — Book Summary
សង្ខេបសៀវភៅ «យុទ្ធសាស្ត្របង្កើតទីផ្សារថ្មីគ្មានគូប្រកួត»
What is Blue Ocean Strategy about?
Blue Ocean Strategy asks how a company can escape crowded, shrinking "red ocean" markets where rivals fight over existing demand, and instead create new market space where competition becomes irrelevant. Kim and Mauborgne's central approach is value innovation, which pursues higher buyer value and lower cost together, supported by tools such as the strategy canvas, the four actions framework and the six paths framework, plus a sequence of utility, price, cost and adoption tests. They illustrate it with cases such as Cirque du Soleil, [yellow tail], NetJets and Curves, and treat execution through tipping point leadership, shown at the New York City Police Department, and through fair process.

A book that begins with friendship
Kim and Mauborgne say the book is about friendship, loyalty and believing in one another. The two had met in a classroom twenty years before, one as the professor and the other as the student, and have worked together ever since. They call the book the victory of a friendship, not of an idea.
The authors admit that no journey is easy. Still, they were excited every day because they were on a mission to learn and improve. Their ideas are not for people who only want to get by, but for readers who want to make a difference and build a company where customers, employees, shareholders and society all win. The authors do not promise it is easy, only that it is worthwhile.
No company stays excellent forever
Kim and Mauborgne say their research shows that no company is permanently excellent, and no industry is either. Companies, like people, do smart things and less smart things. So the authors want to study what made a positive difference and repeat it in a systematic way. They say the most important strategic move is to create blue oceans.
A red ocean is a crowded market where rivals fight over existing, often shrinking, demand. A blue ocean is new market space where no rival competes yet, so demand grows and competition becomes irrelevant. The authors want creating blue oceans to be as systematic as competing in known markets, making the most of opportunity and keeping risk small. In their words, no company can afford to be a riverboat gambler.
The ideas rest on more than fifteen years of research and were tested in companies in Europe, the United States and Asia. The book also covers the human side: building trust and commitment so that people are willing to act. As blue oceans have been explored, the market universe, meaning all markets together, has expanded. The authors believe this expansion is the root of growth.
