What is The Daily Laws: 366 Meditations on Power, Seduction, Mastery, Strategy, and Human Nature about?

Robert Greene arranges a year of readings, one theme per month, to cure the naive beliefs about work and people that he says leave us blindsided, and to train readers to see events clearly as "radical realists." Using stories of Napoleon, Marie Curie, Galileo, Hannibal, Lincoln and many others, he moves from finding your Life's Task and serving an apprenticeship, through court politics, toxic personalities, deception, seduction and persuasion, to grand strategy, rational control of emotion, and facing death. The summary follows these twelve months and their named ideas, such as Resistance Practice, tactical hell, the lower and higher self, and the Sublime.

Why Greene Wrote This Book

Robert Greene starts with our distant ancestors. Their lives depended on reading the world around them: a change in the weather, a place where food might be, a predator hiding in the grass. Anyone who stopped paying attention and lived in wishful dreams paid for it quickly. Under that pressure, the human brain became a sharp tool for spotting danger.

We still have that brain. What changed is the danger. Most of us no longer meet leopards. The threat now is other people: their moods, their hidden motives, and the games at work that nobody explains. Because life feels safe, Greene says, our minds turn inward. We live in our hopes and fantasies, and we become naive.

Our culture makes this worse, he argues, by filling our heads with false ideas about how the world should work. At work, we are told that the right school and the right contacts decide our future, that we must rush to make money and get noticed, and that mistakes and conflict should be avoided. We think work should be fun, that there are shortcuts to skill, and that creativity is a gift you are born with. With people, we believe our friends all want the best for us, that someone who behaved badly can be trusted once he says he has changed, and that a very nice person has nothing to hide. About ourselves, we think honesty means saying whatever is on our mind, that when things go wrong we are simply victims, and that envy and cruelty belong to other people.

Then we start our first real job, and reality hits hard: bosses with fragile egos, betrayal we never saw coming. Choices made for money and attention leave us tired and empty. Flaws we never looked at turn into habits we cannot control. Years later, Greene says, a person can end up bitter and confused, still blaming others when the real cause was those naive beliefs.

Becoming a Radical Realist

Greene's answer is a year of daily reading. His aim is to make you a "radical realist": someone who keeps seeing people and events clearly after the book is finished, and who notices both the dangers and the chances around them. He says the book comes from twenty-five years of research on power, persuasion, strategy, mastery and human nature, and gathers the lessons of all his earlier books.

The year has four parts of three months each. The first part helps you stop listening to outside voices about which career to choose, and find your own calling. Greene argues that persistence and a strong wish to learn matter more than schooling or money, and that failures and conflicts often teach the most. The second part shows the workplace as a political place, where you learn to spot toxic people early and to outsmart people who manipulate others. The third is about persuasion, which works by understanding what the other person wants rather than saying what is on your mind, and then about strategy. The last part looks at what drives human behavior, including your own. Once you accept that you are flawed like everyone else, he says, you understand people better and can change your own bad habits. Facing your fear of death, in his view, helps you treasure the time you have.

The entries come from five of his books, from The Law of the Sublime, which he was still writing, and from his talks, interviews and blog posts. Each month opens with a short essay from his own life. You can skip around, he says, but reading straight through works better. Take notes, link the entries to your own life, and sometimes test an idea in practice.

Finally, Greene asks you to read the book as a bildungsroman, a German word for a novel about a young person's education. In these stories a young hero starts out with naive ideas, meets dishonest people and fools, and slowly loses his illusions. He comes out tested and wise, and finds that the real world is more interesting than the fantasies he grew up with. Greene wants you to be that hero. He ends with words from Marcel Proust: no one can hand us wisdom; we have to find it ourselves.
