What is A People's History of the United States about?

Howard Zinn retells American history from 1492 to the early 2000s from the side of the conquered, the enslaved, workers, women and protesters rather than presidents and founders, asking whom each war, law and reform served. His recurring pattern is that elites divide poorer people by race, sex and class, grant limited concessions to calm unrest, and answer resistance with courts, troops and secret programs, traced from Columbus, Bacon's Rebellion and the Constitution through Haymarket, the New Deal, Vietnam and the war on terrorism. The closing chapters add his argument that no history is neutral and his image of the system's "guards" whose obedience holds it up.

Columbus and the Arawaks

In 1492 Arawak villagers in the Bahamas swam out to Columbus's ships with food, water and gifts. Columbus wrote in his log that they had no weapons, would make good servants and could be ruled by fifty men. Zinn says such sharing was rare in a Europe run by popes, kings and the hunger for money.

Columbus wanted gold. From his base on Hispaniola, his men seized fifteen hundred Arawaks in 1495 and shipped five hundred to Spain; two hundred died on the way. In one province, everyone aged fourteen or older had to bring in gold every three months. Zinn writes that those without a copper token, the proof of payment, had their hands cut off.

Within two years, Zinn says, half of the 250,000 Indians on the island were dead. His main witness, the priest Bartolomé de las Casas, once had Indian slaves himself and later became a fierce critic of Spain. Las Casas reported that up to a third of the men died in each work cycle in the mines. Zinn admits Las Casas's numbers may be exaggerated, but the story is still conquest, slavery and death.

Whose Story Does History Tell?

Zinn asks how history books treat the conquest. The Harvard historian Samuel Eliot Morison wrote in 1954 that Columbus's policy led to "complete genocide," but only on one page of a long, admiring story that ends by praising Columbus as a sailor. Zinn says Morison does not lie. But by mentioning the killing quickly and moving on, he tells readers it matters little.

Every historian must choose what to stress, Zinn accepts. But stressing heroism over mass killing is not neutral, he argues; it helps excuse what was done. So he will write from the side of the conquered, the enslaved and the workers, without turning victims into saints, and look for moments of resistance.

Zinn says Cortés, Pizarro and the English settlers followed the same pattern. He describes the Iroquois League, where land was shared and senior women chose the chiefs. He asks whether such deaths can be excused as the price of progress, and answers that those to be sacrificed should decide.
