What is Mein Kampf: A critical summary of a dangerous book about?

Adolf Hitler wrote Mein Kampf in 1924 and 1925, partly in prison, to tell his life story and set out the racist ideas and plans that later drove Nazi Germany into the Second World War and the Holocaust. This critical summary explains what the book says, how its propaganda worked, and why it matters as a warning, without endorsing any of it.

Free preview: Context, the Preface and a Youth in Austria

Context: A Book Written in Prison

This is context, not from the book. Adolf Hitler wrote Mein Kampf in 1924 and 1925. He wrote part of it in prison, after a failed coup, an attempt to seize power by force, in Munich. In 1933 he took power in Germany. The ideas in this book led to the Nazi dictatorship, the Second World War in Europe from 1939 to 1945, and the Holocaust, in which about six million Jews were murdered. Hitler died in 1945.

This summary shows what Hitler wrote so that readers can understand it and be warned. Every claim in these cards is his claim, not a fact. Many are false or hateful, and the cards say so. From here on, everything comes from the book.

In his preface, Hitler says his sentence began at the fortress of Landsberg on April 1st, 1924. He plans two volumes about the aims of his movement and how it grew. He will tell his own life only where it helps explain the movement and answers what he calls lies about him. He blames those lies on a press that he calls Jewish. That is a false and hateful accusation, and he gives no example.

He admits that speakers win more people than writers, but says the main ideas must be written down so that all followers defend them the same way. He calls the two volumes "building stones" for that shared work. He dedicates volume one to sixteen men who died in Munich on November 9th, 1923. He calls them heroes and martyrs and lists their ordinary jobs, such as waiter and bank official. He does not say what they were doing or who killed them. The dedication turns the dead into a symbol for his followers.

A Boy Who Said No

Hitler tells his life story as a hero's story, so every detail here is "as he tells it." He says he is lucky to be born in Braunau, a town on the border between Austria and Germany. He argues the two countries must join. He says people of the same blood belong in one state, even if this costs money. This is a racial idea, and he offers no proof for it. He adds that a people who cannot feed themselves gain a right to take land from others by war. This is an excuse for conquest.

His father, a poor boy who became a civil servant, wanted his son to follow him. At eleven, Hitler says, he refused: "I would not become a civil servant." At twelve he chose to become a painter. His father said never. He says he then failed on purpose in subjects he disliked, and led his class in history.

He says school made him a nationalist. In Austria, Germans and other peoples fought over language and schools. He describes children wearing German colours, and a sorting of people into fighters, fence-sitters and traitors. He admired how his history teacher held the class by calling on national pride.

He grew to hate the Habsburg family who ruled Austria. He says they favoured the Czechs and harmed the Germans, and he describes the other peoples of Austria as a danger. This is racist, and he gives no evidence. He even calls the killing of the heir to the throne, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, a just punishment. After his father died, and then his mother, he went to Vienna with a small orphan's allowance.

Poor in Vienna: What He Says He Saw

Hitler says the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna refused him as a painter, but its head said his drawings showed a talent for building design. He then wanted to become an architect. He says he spent five years of poverty in Vienna, first as a casual labourer and later painting small pictures. He often went hungry and read in his spare time.

He claims these years gave him a fixed view of the world, and that he never changed it. He says the social problem cannot be understood from above, and that he learned it by living it. He pities many poor workers as victims of bad conditions, but then adds a cold idea. He says society should improve conditions but also be ruthless toward people he thinks cannot be improved, and he compares this to the way nature chooses which living things survive. This treats human beings as things to be removed, and it is a dangerous idea.

On a building site, he says, workmates ordered him to join a trade union. He refused. When he argued against their politics, they threatened to throw him off the scaffold, and he left. He then read the newspaper of the Social Democrats, a left-wing party, and says it was full of lies. He accuses the party of ruling by fear. He says only a force at least as hard can stop such methods, and that ordinary people give in to strength, not to argument. In this way Hitler describes crowds as easy to push, and he treats fear as a political tool.

How His Hatred Found a Single Enemy

Hitler says Vienna opened his eyes to two dangers to the German people: Marxism, the idea of a workers' revolution, and the Jews. He claims that in Linz and in his first Vienna weeks he had no hatred of Jews. By his own figure, Jews were about one in ten of the people in Vienna. He says he saw a man in traditional Jewish dress, bought anti-Jewish pamphlets, and decided that Jews were a different people. That is a racist idea.

Next, he accuses Jews of ruling the press, art, and theatre, and of secretly leading the Marxist parties. He supports this with a few names and his own impressions. These claims are a false conspiracy theory, and he offers no real evidence. He also uses words of dirt and disease about Jews. Such words make people seem less than human, and they prepare the ground for cruelty.

He calls this his moment of discovery, the point where "the scales fell." A short note on how this works: he feels fear and anger, picks one group to carry all the blame, and treats his guess as a proven fact. After that, any bad news seems to confirm it. He says that standing against Jews follows the will of the Almighty Creator. Hitler thus gives his hatred the weight of a holy duty.
