What is The Gate about?

François Bizot's memoir looks back on two linked ordeals in Cambodia: his three months as a prisoner in a hidden Khmer Rouge forest camp in 1971, and his weeks as interpreter inside the crowded French Embassy in Phnom Penh after the city fell in April 1975. Told as one eyewitness's own account, it turns on his strange conversations with the camp chief Douch, who tests his story, and on the embassy gate that decides who may be sheltered and who is handed to the soldiers outside. Along the way Bizot argues that the Angkar organization copied and replaced Buddhist forms, and a 2000 return to the camp reveals why he was spared.

Cambodia as Bizot first knew it

François Bizot, a French researcher, opens his memoir with the Cambodia he met in 1965: a peaceful land of rice fields and temples, where ritual and the spirits of the dead were part of daily life.

Bizot recalls that even poor farmers gave their best fruit to the monasteries, and every boy spent a few years as a monk. Funeral gongs sounded across the countryside, and he loved the rough songs of the chapay singers over the rice fields. Small altars to the spirits of the soil stood where village paths met. This world charmed Bizot at twenty-five. Now, he says, his sadness has hardened into revolt.

Applause for the Khmer Rouge

What weighs on Bizot most is the way the West cheered the Khmer Rouge victory in 1975. The applause, he says, was so loud that it covered the cries of the millions being killed.

At first Bizot took neither side, but he believed the peasants had everything to lose if the communists came. When the Americans arrived in 1970, he saw them as allies. Yet their carelessness often angered him more than the communists' lies. Today he cannot say whether he blames the Americans more for coming or for leaving.

In remote districts, Bizot says, the Khmer Rouge looked orderly, while the soldiers of Lon Nol's government spread theft and corruption. Villagers heard of terrible killings, but in Europe fear of seeming pro-American kept people silent. In power, the Khmer Rouge destroyed whole classes of people, starting with the peasants. The genocide ended in 1979, after four years, when Vietnamese troops invaded.

A witness and a bitter book

Bizot says bad luck made him one of the early witnesses. On October 10, 1971, the Khmer Rouge arrested him during research near Oudong, and he spent three months in their camp. Afterwards the French Embassy asked him to translate a political booklet he had brought back. It already spoke of emptying the towns and of a state-run system built on a smaller population. These warnings, Bizot says, reached Paris but were ignored, and France kept backing the Khmer Rouge.

After the terror, Bizot knew he could never live in Cambodia again. He wrote this book, he says, in bitterness. People, he argues, can reach excellence but also the worst. He rejects the dream of a new dawn of human harmony, because that hope has excused some of history's bloodiest killings.
