A Teacher Who Built a Giant

Duncan Clark points out that Alibaba is an odd name for a Chinese company, and its founder, Jack Ma, used to be an English teacher. Clark calls him an unlikely business giant.

Clark says Alibaba runs the biggest online shopping mall in the world. In September 2014 it first sold shares to the public on the New York Stock Exchange, a step called an IPO. Clark says it raised $25 billion, the largest such sale in history. The shares then climbed until the company was worth almost $300 billion, and Jack became the richest man in Asia.

Then the shares lost half their value from the peak. Clark blames a surprising clash with a government agency over intellectual property in early 2015, then a slower Chinese economy and unsteady stock markets.

Even so, Clark argues that Alibaba is in a strong position. He says more than 400 million people buy on its websites each year, and its tens of millions of daily packages make up almost two-thirds of all parcels sent in China. In his view, Alibaba is helping China move from "Made in China" to "Bought in China": from a country that mainly made goods for others to a country of shoppers. Clark cites a forecast that China's middle class will rise to half a billion, up from 300 million, in a decade, but he does not say whose forecast it is.

Clark's Link to the Story

Clark first met Jack in summer 1999, a few months after Alibaba began in a small apartment in Hangzhou. He counted the founders by the toothbrushes in the bathroom: Jack, his wife Cathy and sixteen others. Clark says the couple had bet everything they owned on the company, even their home. Jack talked of a company that would last eighty years, later 102 years, so that it would span three centuries. Clark says the goal should have sounded crazy in that small flat, yet Jack's passion made it believable.

Clark also declares his own role. He advised Alibaba in its early years, and the company helped arrange interviews for this book. He says he was never an employee and calls the book an independent account. In 2000 he was given the right to buy shares at 30 cents each. By the deadline in early 2003, the dot-com bubble had burst and Alibaba's first business was struggling, so he did not buy. After the 2014 IPO, he says, that choice became a $30 million mistake.

Clark ends with open questions. Alibaba's main business is still online shopping, so can it keep growing? Rivals are waiting, and the Chinese government is watching. Can Jack keep the government on his side? To begin, Clark takes a tour of what Jack calls the "iron triangle": e-commerce, logistics and finance.
