What is Financial Intelligence for Entrepreneurs about?

Karen Berman and Joe Knight ask how an owner can read a company's financial reports without being fooled by them, starting from the idea that profit, revenue and asset values rest on estimates, assumptions and accountants' judgment. They walk through the income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statement, then ratios, return on investment (net present value, payback and internal rate of return), working capital and the cash conversion cycle, with cases such as Sunbeam, WorldCom and Waste Management and the owners' own firm Setpoint. They close by arguing that owners should teach staff the numbers through open-book management.

Reading what the numbers mean

Karen Berman and Joe Knight define financial intelligence as knowing what the numbers in a business really mean. Their book is for entrepreneurs and company owners. It teaches how to read the three main financial statements, work out key ratios, and judge a big purchase with return on investment, or ROI. It also shows why cash and profit are different, and why a company needs both.

The authors share what they call a little secret of their profession: finance is as much an art as a science. Many numbers in a company's reports rest on estimates and assumptions. If you can see those guesses, you can tell which way a report may lean, and decide better.

Why owners need it

Berman and Knight have run their own businesses and paid their own staff, so they wrote this edition for owners. They use stories from the scandals of the late 1990s and early 2000s because the same rules of finance apply at every company size. For example, the authors report that Waste Management raised its profits greatly just by changing how it depreciated its trucks and other equipment. Depreciation means spreading the cost of a long-lasting item over the years it is used.

Paul Saginaw and Ari Weinzweig started Zingerman's Deli in Ann Arbor, Michigan, with no finance training. Saginaw says that at first, the busier they got, the more money they lost. Chip Conley, founder of the Joie de Vivre hotel chain, says running on gut feeling works only with "pretty thick pants," meaning enough protection from mistakes. The authors would rather you build financial intelligence.
