What is The Psychology of Selling: Increase Your Sales Faster and Easier Than You Ever Thought Possible about?

Brian Tracy argues that most of selling happens in the mind, both the salesperson's and the customer's. He shows how self-esteem, goals and fear of rejection shape a seller's results, then explains why people buy and walks through getting appointments, presenting, handling the 'think it over' reply and closing, ending with his ten keys to success in sales.

A Big Promise and a Hard Start

Brian Tracy opens with a bold promise. He says his ideas can help a salesperson double, triple, or even quadruple sales and income in a few months, sometimes in a few weeks. The book is the written form of his audio program. Tracy claims the program has been translated into sixteen languages, is used in twenty-four countries, and that he has trained more than 500,000 salespeople. These are his own claims.

Then he tells his own story. He left high school without finishing, did manual jobs, and travelled the world. When the manual work ran out, he fell into selling almost by accident. He was paid only by commission, so he earned money only when he sold. His training was a stack of cards, some brochures, and a door to knock on. He called on offices by day and on homes at night.

Two pieces of advice followed. The manager who hired him said selling is a numbers game: talk to enough people and someone will buy. Later, someone else said it is a rejection game: the more "no" answers you collect, the more "yes" answers you will get. So Tracy rushed from person to person, and spoke louder and faster when someone lost interest. He was still barely hanging on.

The Turning Point

After six months, Tracy earned just enough to rent one small room. Then he asked the best salesperson in the company what he did differently. It was not hard work. Tracy was up at five or six, waiting in the parking lot by 7:00 a.m., and knocking on doors until nine or ten at night. The top salesperson came in around nine, talked with prospects who came to him, and made sale after sale all day. According to Tracy, this man sold five to ten times as much as anyone else in the office, while hardly seeming to work.

The reason, Tracy learned, was training, not effort. A large company had trained this man for sixteen months in professional selling. The man asked Tracy to show his sales presentation. Tracy had never even seen one. So the top salesperson showed his own. He did not give a speech or use clever lines. He asked step-by-step questions that moved from broad to narrow, until the prospect could see for themselves how the product would help. The last question simply asked for the sale.

Tracy wrote it all down and changed his way of working. Instead of talking about features, he asked questions and learned about each prospect's situation. He says his sales went up. Then he read books for two hours every morning, listened to audio programs as he walked, and went to seminars. He says his sales kept rising, and that he became a sales manager. He claims many of the recruits he trained later became millionaires.

Cause and Effect, and the Treadmill

Tracy says his big discovery was the Law of Cause and Effect. Everything has a cause, so success is not an accident and neither is failure. Success, he says, is predictable and "leaves tracks." His rule is simple: if you do what successful people do, again and again, you will in time get what they get. He adds that everyone in the top 10 percent started in the bottom 10 percent, and that they got there by learning from experts.

Next, he uses a treadmill as an example. He tells his audiences that Americans spend more than a billion dollars a year on treadmills, and asks what decides the benefit from one. The answer is how often and how long you use it. No one doubts that regular use brings results. Tracy says his methods are the same: they are used by the highest-paid salespeople, so the question is not whether they work, but whether you will use them.

This is the book's main promise: Tracy says that readers who practice his methods will reach the top 10 percent of their field. It is his claim, not a proven result. His own example also sets a condition. Like a treadmill, the methods help only if you use them often.
