What is The Art of War about?

The Drill, Its Lesson, and Its Uncertainty

The introduction begins with a story about testing whether words can become disciplined action. In the biography quoted by Lionel Giles, King Ho Lu asks Sun Wu, known as Sun Tzu, to demonstrate his method by drilling 180 palace women. Two of the king's favorites lead the groups. When the women laugh instead of following orders, Sun Tzu first accepts responsibility for instructions that may not have been clear. He explains again. When laughter continues, he places responsibility on the leaders and orders their execution, despite the king's attempt to stop him.

The remaining women then perform the drill as commanded. The story links clarity, responsibility, enforcement, and command independence, but it does so through an extreme act rather than an ordinary lesson about management. Giles's presentation subsequently raises doubts about Sun Tzu's biography and the reliability of such traditions. That separation is essential: understanding what a story is meant to demonstrate does not establish that the event happened exactly as told. The episode introduces both the severity of the military setting and the historical questions surrounding the person associated with the text.

An Ancient Text, an Uncertain Biography

Giles distinguishes uncertainty about the man from evidence about the book's age. Accounts of Sun Wu's career do not agree neatly, and an important chronicle does not name him as the traditional biography might lead a reader to expect. Yet quotations in other works, old vocabulary, military institutions, and the style of the thirteen chapters support an ancient core. Giles argues that the text existed by the late fifth century BCE, while discussing evidence and opinions that place it earlier. He does not need every biographical detail to be reliable for the surviving work to be genuinely old.

Who Is Speaking in This Edition?

The words themselves also reached readers through a history of copying and interpretation. Giles describes variant readings and the comparison of surviving editions and quotations to reconstruct a usable text. Commentators such as Ts'ao Ts'ao, Tu Mu, and Chang Yu explain compressed phrases, disagree about meanings, and add historical examples. These voices matter because a brief maxim can admit more than one reading. In this edition, a statement from Sun Tzu and an illustration from a later commentator should not be silently treated as the same kind of evidence or as words written at the same time.

Why Study War in a Peace Tradition?

The introduction also confronts the place of military study in a culture that valued peace and criticized militarism. The defenses Giles collects present command as a grave responsibility whose ignorance can cost other people's lives. This does not remove the violence in the book or turn it into a modern ethical manual. It establishes the setting for the chapters that follow: war must be understood because its consequences are serious, and skill includes judging when force should be used, how much it costs, and when a victory would destroy what was worth preserving.
