What is The Brothers Karamazov about?

Dostoevsky's last novel follows three very different brothers, passionate Dmitri, doubting Ivan and gentle Alyosha, and their selfish, cruel father, who is murdered. Through a love rivalry, a monastery, a famous story about God and freedom, and a dramatic trial, the book asks big questions about faith, guilt and love.

A Family in a Small Russian Town

The novel opens with a promise of tragedy. A narrator from a small Russian town with a famous monastery tells the story. He begins with Fyodor Pavlovitch Karamazov, a local landowner, and says that Fyodor died a dark and tragic death thirteen years ago. How he died, the narrator says, will be told later in the book. That death hangs over everything that follows.

The narrator calls Fyodor low, wicked and senseless, yet very clever with money. He began with almost nothing, hardly ever lived on his own estate, and left about 100,000 roubles in cash. Fyodor Pavlovitch has three sons. Dmitri, called Mitya, is the oldest, from his first marriage. Ivan and Alexey, called Alyosha, are the sons of his second wife. His first wife, Adelaïda Miüsov, came from a rich noble family. She ran away with him to marry, but there was no love on either side. Fyodor wanted her dowry, the money a bride brings, and he took 25,000 roubles of it. They fought often, and her relatives had to stop him from taking her land. At last she ran away to Petersburg with a poor student of religion, leaving three-year-old Mitya behind. She soon died there. Fyodor was drunk when he heard. People said he shouted with joy, and others said he cried like a child. The narrator thinks both may be true.

The Neglected Sons

Fyodor forgot his small son, not out of hatred but out of carelessness. Grigory, the family servant, looked after Mitya for almost a year. Then Pyotr Alexandrovitch Miüsov, Adelaïda's cousin, came back from Paris and took charge of the boy. He soon forgot him too and left him with a relative in Moscow. Mitya grew up believing he had property of his own and would be free when he came of age. He lived wildly in the army and spent too much. When he came to settle accounts with his father, he found Fyodor had paid him small sums and said nothing was left. Mitya suspected he was being cheated. The narrator says this led to the coming disaster.

Fyodor soon married again. His second wife, Sofya Ivanovna, was a sixteen-year-old orphan raised by a harsh general's widow. She brought no dowry. Fyodor brought loose women into the house, and the gentle Sofya became very ill. She gave birth to Ivan and Alyosha and died when Alyosha was almost four. Again the father forgot his sons and Grigory cared for them. Three months later the widow slapped Fyodor, took the boys away, and soon died. Her heir, Yefim Petrovitch Polenov, an honest nobleman, raised the boys at his own cost. Ivan, clever and proud, studied in Moscow, supported himself, and wrote a surprising article on church courts. Later he came to visit his father and tried to calm the quarrel between Fyodor and Dmitri, who planned to sue his father.

Alyosha, Elder Zossima and a Dangerous Meeting

Alyosha, twenty, is the hero. The narrator describes him as a loving young man who never judges anyone. People trust him easily. He remembered his mother praying with him as a small child. When he left school early to find her grave, Fyodor did not even know where it was. Grigory showed him a tombstone he had paid for himself. Soon Alyosha asked his father's leave to enter the monastery. Fyodor agreed, joked about devils and hell, then wept, saying Alyosha was the only one who had never condemned him. The narrator calls the old man both wicked and sentimental.

At the monastery Alyosha follows Father Zossima, the elder. An elder is a monk who guides others, and those who choose him give up their own will and confess everything to him. Zossima, sixty-five, is a former army officer who is cheerful and gentle. Pilgrims come from far away for his blessing, and many say he can see people's secrets. Alyosha believes in him completely.

Now the whole family is in town for the first time. The quarrel between Fyodor and Dmitri is at its worst. Fyodor suggests, half as a joke, that they all meet in Zossima's cell to settle it. Dmitri accepts, though he suspects a trap. Miüsov joins because of his own lawsuit with the monastery. Alyosha is afraid they will insult the elder. The narrator warns that the meeting is called for a false reason.
