What is Peter Pan about?

J. M. Barrie's story follows Wendy, John and Michael Darling as Peter, the boy who refuses to grow up, leads them from their London nursery to the Neverland, an island built from their own make-believe. There Wendy becomes a mother to the lost boys, Tinker Bell's jealousy and Captain Hook's pirates turn play into real danger, and a mocking narrator keeps weighing the freedom of staying a child against the love and memory that growing up brings. The book is built on contrasts: Peter, who forgets every hurt and every friend, against the Darling parents, who keep the window open and wait.

Two Is the Beginning of the End

The story opens with a short, sad sentence from the narrator: "All children, except one, grow up." Wendy Darling learns this when she is two. She picks a flower in a garden and runs to show her mother. Mrs. Darling is so charmed that she cries out, wishing Wendy could stay like this for ever. From that moment, Wendy understands that she must grow up. In the narrator's words, two is the beginning of the end.

The Darlings live at No. 14. Mr. Darling is proud that he understands money, although the narrator teases that nobody really understands stocks and shares. When Wendy is born, he sits by his wife's bed with a pencil and paper, working out whether they can afford another child. His sums come out differently every time. Mrs. Darling wants to take the risk, and in the end Wendy is kept. So are John and Michael.

The Darlings want a nurse, like their neighbours, but they are poor. So their nurse is Nana, a Newfoundland, which is a very large, gentle kind of dog. She bathes the children, walks them to school and gets up at once if one of them cries in the night. Still, Mr. Darling wonders whether the neighbours talk about a dog nurse, and he sometimes feels that Nana does not admire him. Even so, the narrator says there was never a simpler, happier family, until Peter Pan came.

A Map of a Child's Mind

Each night, after the children fall asleep, Mrs. Darling tidies their minds. The narrator says every good mother does this, like tidying drawers. By morning, the naughty thoughts are folded small at the bottom, and the prettier ones are laid out on top, ready to wear.

Somewhere in every child's mind is the Neverland, an island of lagoons, caves and make-believe. A map of a child's mind would be hard to draw, the narrator says, because nothing in it stays still. John's has a lagoon with flamingoes flying over it. Wendy has a house of leaves and a pet wolf. The narrator adds that grown-ups have been there too. They can still hear the waves, but they will never land there again. This is the book's first picture of what growing up costs.

Playing at the Neverland in the daytime, with chairs and a tablecloth, is not frightening. Just before sleep, though, the island feels very real, and the narrator says that is the reason for night-lights.

One night, Mrs. Darling finds a word in her children's minds that she does not understand: Peter. It is written all over Wendy's thoughts, and it looks cocky, which means too sure of itself. Wendy explains that he is Peter Pan. Mrs. Darling half remembers a Peter Pan from her own childhood, a boy who lived with the fairies and went part of the way with children who died. But now she is a sensible married woman, and she doubts he is real. Besides, she says, he would be grown up by now. "He is just my size," Wendy insists. Mr. Darling laughs it off and blames Nana for the idea.

The Boy Who Breaks In

Soon Mrs. Darling finds leaves on the nursery floor, close to the window. Wendy calmly explains that Peter sometimes visits at night. He sits at the end of her bed and plays his pipes to her. She never wakes, but somehow she knows. When she says he must come in by the window, her mother points out that the nursery is three floors up.

Mrs. Darling checks the story like a detective. The leaves, she decides, come from no tree that grows in England. She lowers a tape from the window to the street and finds a straight drop of thirty feet, with nothing to climb. She decides that Wendy was only dreaming.

The narrator then reveals that Wendy was not dreaming. The very next night, Nana has her evening off, and Mrs. Darling falls asleep by the fire. The room is lit by three night-lights, and the narrator says there should have been a fourth. Mrs. Darling dreams that the Neverland has come too close and that a strange boy has broken through from it. She is not afraid of him, because she feels she has seen him before in the faces of women who never had children. Then the window really blows open, and a boy drops onto the floor, with a small, lively light darting about the room. Mrs. Darling wakes and knows at once that the boy is Peter Pan. He wears clothes of leaves, and he still has all his first teeth. When he sees that she is a grown-up, he grinds them at her angrily.
