What is The Great Gatsby about?
In the summer of 1922, narrator Nick Carraway moves to Long Island and watches his mysterious neighbor Jay Gatsby throw huge parties, all to win back Daisy Buchanan, the woman he loved five years earlier. Fitzgerald tells the story through Nick's careful, not fully honest eyes, using symbols such as the green light, the valley of ashes and the billboard eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg. The novel follows the self-invented James Gatz, the clash between old money and new money, and the "careless people" who leave others to clean up the damage, ending in a hit-and-run death, a shooting and a nearly empty funeral.

Nick Carraway Comes East
Nick Carraway, the narrator, opens the novel with advice his father once gave him. Before he criticizes anyone, he should remember that most people have not had his advantages. So Nick tries to reserve all judgments: he waits before deciding what he thinks of a person. Because he listens without judging, people often tell him their secrets, even when he would rather not hear them.
Nick admits that this patience has a limit. He tells the story after it is over, and when he came home from the East, he wanted no more of other people's private troubles. Only one man is free from this feeling: Gatsby, whose name is the book's title. Gatsby stood for many things Nick dislikes, yet Nick saw in him a rare "gift for hope". Nick says Gatsby himself turned out all right. What spoiled Nick's interest in people was the ugly world that fed on Gatsby and his dreams.
Nick comes from a well-off family in the Middle West. He fought in the Great War (the First World War) and came back restless. In the spring of 1922 he moves East to learn the bond business, which means buying and selling investments. His father agrees to support him for a year. Nick rents a cheap, worn-out little house in West Egg, a village on Long Island, for eighty dollars a month. For a day or two he is lonely. Then a newcomer asks him the way to the village, and Nick suddenly feels at home. He buys a shelf of books about banking and feels that life is starting again with the summer.
West Egg faces East Egg across a small bay, about twenty miles from New York City. The two pieces of land have the same egg shape, but they are very different places. West Egg is the less fashionable one, while East Egg has white palaces along the water. Nick's small house stands between two huge estates. The one next to it is enormous: a new copy of a French town hall, with a tower, a marble swimming pool, and gardens and lawns covering over forty acres. It is the home of a man named Gatsby, whom Nick has not yet met.
Dinner With the Buchanans
One warm, windy evening Nick drives across the bay to East Egg for dinner with Daisy and Tom Buchanan. Daisy is a distant cousin of Nick's, and Tom was at college with him. Tom's family is very rich, and Tom was once a famous college football player. Now thirty, he has moved East from Chicago and brought his own polo ponies with him. (Polo is a sport played on horseback.) Nick sees a proud, hard man whose powerful body seems made for pushing others around. Tom shows off his gardens and his view of the bay. When he hears the name of Nick's firm, he says he has never heard of it. Nick answers sharply that Tom will hear of it if he stays in the East. Tom replies that only a fool would live anywhere else.
Inside, two young women in white rest on a huge couch. One is Daisy, whose low, exciting voice makes people lean closer to listen. She tells Nick he ought to see her little daughter, whom he has never met. Daisy makes every listener feel special, but her sweet words are often made up on the spot. Later she tells Nick he is like a rose, which he knows is not true. The other woman is Jordan Baker, cool and bored, who hardly speaks. When Jordan says Nick must know a man in West Egg named Gatsby, Daisy asks, "What Gatsby?" Before Nick can explain that Gatsby is his neighbor, dinner is served.
Dinner on the porch is slow and idle. Daisy talks about the longest day of the year, which she always waits for and then misses. Nick feels that here, unlike in the West, evenings simply drift by without anyone wanting anything.
Then Tom suddenly announces that civilization is falling apart. He praises a racist book that says white people must stay in control of other races, and he counts himself and his friends among the people who should rule. Nick shows these ideas as ugly and foolish, and he senses something sad in Tom, who seems to need a new idea to feel important. Daisy half mocks Tom, then quickly changes the subject to a silly story about the butler's nose.
A Phone Call at Dinner
During dinner the butler whispers to Tom Buchanan that there is a telephone call. Tom frowns and goes inside, and soon Daisy follows him. Jordan Baker leans toward the room, trying to hear. Nick asks what is going on, and Jordan is surprised that he does not know. She thought everybody knew: Tom has a woman in New York. In Jordan's view, the woman should at least not phone him during dinner.
Tom and Daisy come back. Daisy is too cheerful and chatters about a bird singing on the lawn, and Tom agrees in an unhappy voice. Then the phone rings again, and nobody can find anything to say. Nick feels deeply uncomfortable, and he guesses that everyone at the table is thinking about the caller. After dinner Tom and Jordan go to the library, and Nick follows Daisy to the dark front porch.
Alone with Nick, Daisy says she has had a very bad time and now believes in very little. She tells him about the day her daughter was born. Tom was away, and nobody knew where. When Daisy learned the baby was a girl, she turned her head away and cried. Then she said she hoped her daughter would grow up to be "a beautiful little fool", because in this world that was the best thing a girl could be. Daisy adds, with a proud laugh, that she has seen and done everything.
While she speaks, her voice holds Nick. But as soon as she stops, he feels the basic insincerity of her words: she does not truly mean them. It seems to him that the whole evening has been a kind of act to make him feel sorry for her. Then Daisy gives him a pleased, knowing smile, as if she and Tom share a private club that Nick is not part of. Here the novel first shows the Buchanans' marriage: rich and lovely from outside, but hiding pain and lies.
A Green Light Across the Water
Back inside, Jordan Baker gets up to go to bed, because she is playing in a tournament the next day. Now Nick knows why her face looked familiar: he has seen her photograph many times in the sports pages. He also remembers hearing an unkind story about her, though he has forgotten what it was. Daisy jokes that she will push Nick and Jordan together, and she says Jordan will spend many weekends with them this summer. Tom asks whether Daisy had a private talk with Nick on the porch, and he warns Nick not to believe everything he hears.
As Nick leaves, Daisy calls him back. She and Tom have heard that he is engaged to a girl back West. Nick says it is not true and that he is too poor to marry. In fact, this rumor is one of the reasons he moved East: he did not want gossip to push him into a wedding.
Nick is touched that the couple cares about his life, and for a moment the rich pair seem closer to him. Still, driving home, he feels confused and a little disgusted. He thinks Daisy ought to take her child and leave, but she shows no sign of it. As for Tom, Nick finds the affair less strange than the way a book has upset him. Nick feels Tom is holding on to old, tired ideas because pride in his own strength is no longer enough for him.
At home in West Egg, Nick sits in his yard on a loud, bright summer night. Then he notices a figure on the lawn of the mansion next door and guesses it is Gatsby himself. Nick almost calls out, but the man seems to want to be alone. He stretches his arms toward the dark water, and Nick thinks he is trembling. Nick looks across the bay and sees nothing but one small green light far away, perhaps at the end of a dock. When he looks back, Gatsby has vanished. The book's great question begins here: what is Gatsby reaching for?
